• Futures: A future bet is a wager placed on a significant event in the far future, like a team winning the Super Bowl or a player winning an MVP award.

Is online sports betting legal in Michigan? Legal overview

Ever since the US Supreme Court struck down the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992 (PASPA), every state has been able to create its own laws for sports betting. Governor Gretchen Whitmer legalized sports betting in Michigan when she signed HB 4917 into law in December 2019. This bill allowed online sports betting to go live in MI, but the first Michigan sports betting apps didn’t launch until January 2021.

1. You must be 21 or older to bet in Michigan and within the state’s borders.
   
2. You must use a sportsbook licensed by the Michigan Gaming Control Board to bet legally.
   
3. The Michigan Gaming Control Board licenses 15 online operators.
   
4. You can bet on college sports, including placing bets on in-state teams and player props.
   
5. You cannot bet on eSports in Michigan.

Retail MI sports betting

Retail sports betting in Michigan went live before online wagering, with the first sportsbook opening its doors in March 2020. This was BetMGM Sportsbook at the MGM Grand Detroit. Every online sportsbook has to partner with a land-based casino to launch, and retail sportsbooks can only open at these locations. You must be 21 to visit a retail sportsbook and bet and may be asked to provide a valid photo ID to prove your age.

Latest updates — What’s happening in Michigan

The most recent changes to the Michigan sports betting market was the launch of DraftKings retail sportsbook at Bay Mills Resort & Casino in November 2022. However, other than online and retail Michigan sportsbooks launching, there have been no significant changes to sports betting regulations. 

On the broader gambling market, interstate online poker became available through the PokerStars site on January 3, 2023. This allows you to play online poker games with players in other states where online poker is legalized. PokerStars has made a big impact since launching in MI, signing a partnership with the local Detroit Red Wings NHL team.
