Expert verdict

It is easy to see why TAB is so popular with New Zealand sports betting fans. The TAB NZ website and app are great looking sports betting products, and the markets on offer are vast and detailed.

However, there are a few downsides to TAB. For a start, most of the odds are less than attractive. There are very few markets in which TAB has the most competitive odds, and their overall bookmaker margin is well below the industry average.

There were a few other negatives associated with TAB. The lack of 24/7 customer support, the deposit fees for card payments and the limited betting features were all disappointing.

Overall, this is a fairly middle of the road betting option for sports fans in New Zealand. It would have been great to have better odds and support options, but the sports markets are extensive and the TAB NZ app is of a very high quality.

TAB NZ sports bonuses

A strong welcome bonus can give your sports betting adventure the perfect start, so it’s no surprise that we always start our reviews by looking at this key area. At TAB New Zealand, new players can claim NZ$50 in free bets when they register a new account and make a first deposit of at least NZ$10.

In addition, there’s a range of promotions for existing customers. These will often relate to specific sporting events taking place at that time. For example, during the American football season, you can claim your money back if the winning margin element of a double bet lets you down.

Similarly, if you place a moneyline bet on an NBA game, TAB NZ will payout if your chosen team is ahead by 12+ points at half time.

Bonus rating

90/100 Superb range of bonuses
  • NZ$50 in bonus bets for new players
  • Keep all winnings
  • Excellent reload offers

Wow! I loved the welcome offer at TAB New Zealand. Claiming NZ$50 in bonus bets gives you a fantastic chance to try out some bets when you first join TAB. It compares favourably with operators such as Royal Panda, who gives new players a 50% matched free bet up to NZ$50.

Almost as impressive was the enticing range of reload offers for existing customers. No matter which sports you follow, TAB will have suitable bonus offers. Simply check out the promo section, and you’ll not be disappointed.

We all have our favourite bonus offers, and mine was the Horse Racing Bonus Back promotion. In bonus funds, this gives you your money back if the horse you bet on finishes 2nd, 3rd or 4th in selected horse races. Perfect for getting over the disappointment of your horse being narrowly defeated.

Overall, the score in this area reflects that this is one of the best sportsbooks I’ve found for promotional offers, on a par with international sites like Ladbrokes. The bonus offers at TAB betting go a long way towards adding extra value to your account.

Sports and betting markets at TAB

For many sports betting fans, the quality of the markets at a betting site is the number one factor to consider when choosing which sportsbook to join. After all, we all want to be able to bet on our favourite sports!

We like to see a sportsbook offer at least 20 sports; TAB New Zealand does that and more. Its sports betting markets cover a host of major sports. These include those most popular with Kiwis, such as rugby union, cricket, rugby league, and horse racing events.

Within each sport, you will find an array of betting markets. Typically, these markets cover moneylines, totals, spreads and props. You can also place parlays and futures bets. The majority of these are also available as live betting markets.

As well as many major sports, our TAB sports review also found markets covering a number of minor sports. This included surfing, darts, handball and bowls. Overall there are 30 sports covered.

Sports & markets rating

90/100 Comprehensive range of betting markets
  • Markets for 30 different sports
  • Extensive markets for major events
  • Great live betting markets
  • Not as many minor sports as others

It’s another ‘Wow’ from me. The sports markets at TAB NZ are seriously impressive. All of the most popular sports are covered, as well as a large number of minor ones. However, it still has a way to go before it can compete with bet365, which covers a massive 40 sports.

Nevertheless, the range of markets within each event is also highly impressive. Regardless of which bet types you like to place, TAB NZ will have suitable markets for you. Fancy placing a moneyline? No problem. Want to bet on an obscure spread market? TAB has your back.

I was especially pleased to see the number of prop bets available for major events. The selection at TAB NZ compares very favourably with what you will find at many other sites. However, there are leading sites such as LeoVegas which has a greater range of minor sports markets among the 35 sports it offers.

In summary, if you are looking for a specific betting market, then it is likely that TAB will have it. But whilst TAB scores very highly in this category, it is a few minor sports away from nailing an even higher score.

Additional market details: The cricket markets at TAB feature a number of ‘Power Play’ markets. These offer an enhanced price for specific combinations to occur. For example, a certain player to take five wickets and a specific player to score 50+ runs.

Additional market details: Similarly, the markets for major football games have a number of interesting features. These include ‘Correct Score Combinations’ — where you bet on two different scorelines, and markets for the first player to be shown a yellow card.

TAB sports betting features

We all want to have fun when betting on sports. And betting features are a great way of adding some extra zip to your betting experience. With that in mind, we are now going to take a detailed look at some of the more interesting features of TAB’s betting markets.

To support the extensive live bet options offered, you can also find an array of relevant statistical information. In some cases, you will find live streams for events such as overseas basketball leagues and minor tennis tournaments.

Many of the markets at TAB allow you to lock in a profit by cashing out. If your bet is winning in-play, you can opt to take a reduced profit, which guards against the bet losing.

Whilst TAB New Zealand supports live betting, live streaming and cashouts, the operator does not offer any bet builder options and there are no virtual betting markets.

Betting features rating

75/100 Average range of betting features
  • Excellent live betting markets
  • Live streaming for some events
  • No bet builders
  • No virtual markets

This brings to an end TAB NZ’s run of exceptional scores. I found this a slightly underwhelming area for this sportsbook. Whilst it does have a few betting features, it’s all a bit run-of-the-mill compared to many other operators.

So what are the positives? The live betting markets are vast and can really add extra excitement to your betting. The in-depth statistics and live streaming for some events can also help to inform your betting decisions. Who doesn’t like to watch an event whilst betting on it!

Unfortunately, TAB is somewhat lacking in other areas. If you are looking for a range of exciting betting features, then an operator such as William Hill will be more suitable for you. They offer fun features such as #YourOdds, where you can request odds for a market you have created yourself.

I was also disappointed to find that there were no virtual markets available at TAB. Virtual betting is a great way of betting on your favourite sport, even when there is no ‘real’ action taking place. Customers looking for this feature can try Fansbet sportsbook.

So overall, I found TAB less than impressive in this area. OK, there are some betting features, but they pale in comparison to what you can discover at many other sites.

Additional features: The markets for major football games will usually feature a selection of ‘Power Play’ bets. These are enhanced odds on specific prop bets. For example, the odds of each team having 2+ corners in each half could be enhanced from 5.0 to 7.0. These Power Play markets have great odds and can be found on the main betting menu for each game.

TAB sports odds

Ultimately, you want to find the very best odds when you place bets. The better the odds, the bigger your potential winnings. Let’s now look at how TAB NZ performs in this area.

The key statistic to look at when evaluating better odds is average payout percentage. The higher the bookmaker’s average payout percentage, the more attractive the odds. We like to see an average payout percentage of around 95%. Anything below 93% is not worth considering in our book.

At TAB NZ, the average payout percentage is around 93.9%. This means that most punters will find the sports odds at TAB inferior to many other operators.

It is worth mentioning that the power play markets do swing the bookmaker margin in your favour. As these markets offer enhanced odds, the bookmaker margin will be much lower.

Odds rating

70/100 Below average odds on many events
  • Enhanced odds on major upcoming races and events
  • Competitive racing odds in some markets
  • Below average bookmaker margin

This is an area of particular significance to me, as I know the importance of finding the very best odds for sports bets. Therefore, I was quite disappointed with TAB’s offering in this department.

Whilst I did find a few markets in which TAB had the most competitive racing odds for upcoming races (be that horse racing events or greyhounds), in the majority of cases, better odds can be found elsewhere.

This was especially evident when it came to major events like the New Zealand Cup and other big live racing events. TAB’s odds at 93.90% were usually inferior to the majority of competitors such as BetVictor at 95.10%, as well as many offshore betting sites.

One positive is the Power Play options do allow you to benefit from enhanced odds in certain markets. It’s worth looking at these before placing your bets. You’ll often find that a bet you wish to place actually has better odds than you first thought. These Power Plays are also available at sites like 888Sport, although they are often referred to by other names.

Overall, this was a relatively weak area for TAB. Unless you are using the power play markets, you will struggle to find many sporting events in which TAB offers the best odds in the industry.

Payment methods

Now for the bit about money! Sports bettors want fast and reliable payment options when depositing and withdrawing funds. Ideally, they do not want to pay any fees, and they want their requests to be processed instantly.

At TAB New Zealand, sports bettors can deposit and withdraw via Visa, MasterCard or online banking. For deposits made via Visa or MasterCard, there is a $2.15 fee applied.

Deposits are processed instantly, whilst withdrawal times can vary depending upon your chosen method. In most cases, your funds will be with you in 1-3 business days.

TAB NZ is one of the few sportsbooks to charge sports bettors a fee for depositing, so be careful as VISA and Mastercard payments will incur a small price on top of the deposit amount.

Payments rating

70/100 Secure but limited online options
  • Cash at retail outlets/racetracks
  • Vary low minimum deposit
  • No e-wallets
  • Fees for card deposits

One other option for depositing money into your TAB account is to visit a TAB store or TAB trackside outlet. If you do this, you can make cash deposits into your account. You can also make withdrawals via these outlets and use any of the online options. There are no fees attached to this option.

I can’t say I was overly impressed with TAB New Zealand in this area. The list of available payment options is much smaller than you will find at the best alternatives. For example, Neds currently offers players nine different ways to fund their accounts and does not charge fees.

There is also the annoying problem of deposit fees. Having to pay $2.15 every time you make a card payment is just not on. The majority of competitors in New Zealand offer free payments, regardless of your chosen method. Why can’t it be free at TAB?

One positive for TAB is the very low minimum deposit amount. Being able to deposit as little as $0.01 into your account, means that even players on minimal budgets can bet here. Many operators, such as Betway, require deposits of at least $10, so TAB certainly has an advantage in this area.

But overall, this is a poor offering from TAB. I want to have a wide variety of banking options at my disposal, and unfortunately, this is not something this site can offer. Maybe this situation will change in the future, but in the meantime, it’s a low score in this category.

Safety features at TAB sports

Security is of paramount importance when betting online. You need to know that the operator you are using is completely fair and can be trusted with your personal and financial data.

TAB New Zealand is governed by the TAB NZ board, the former New Zealand Racing Board. They are New Zealand’s sole racing and sports betting agency. However, sports bettors in New Zealand do have the option of using an offshore betting agency for their wagering.

In addition, TAB has a number of security features to help keep you safe online. This includes a range of safer gambling tools that allow you to set limits on the time and money you spend on the site. You can even opt for a period of self-exclusion.

Safety rating

90/100 Trustworthy operator
  • Fully secure website
  • Full range of responsible gambling tools
  • Governed by TAB NZ Board
  • No SSL encryption

I need to feel fully secure when betting online and have complete trust in the operator I am using. The good news is that TAB New Zealand exceeded my expectations in this area.

For a start, their responsible gaming provision is excellent. Not only can you set your own parameters for your gambling activity, but there are also videos and articles on the site full of safer gambling guidance. This is the same set of tools you will find at other leading Australian and New Zealand betting sites such as PlayUp.

I was also pleased to see that TAB requires complete security checks before you can have your account verified. This is great for peace of mind, and demonstrates that TAB is very serious about online security. It all adds up to a safe and reliable online betting experience.

In summary, did I feel completely secure when using TAB NZ? Absolutely. I was fully confident that TAB NZ could be trusted with my data and was providing a completely fair betting provision. However, nothing can compare to the safety offered at Labrokes with its 2048-bit encryption protocols.

Customer support: phone and email options

No betting company is perfect. Regardless of how experienced you are in online betting, you will occasionally encounter problems. When these issues occur, players need to have expert guidance available to them. So how can players at TAB NZ get assistance when they have problems?

The contact centre at TAB offers both email and telephone support. This support is available seven days a week from 8:30am — 8:00pm on weekdays, and until 10:00pm at the weekend.

There is also an extensive Frequently Asked Questions section on the TAB NZ website. Here you will find hundreds of articles that provide answers to common issues.

Support rating

80/100 Excellent telephone and email support
  • Extensive FAQs
  • Weekly telephone support
  • No 24/7 support
  • No live chat

‘Could be better’ is probably the best way of summing up the customer support at TAB NZ. Whilst they do tick a lot of the boxes, they are lacking in some areas.

The positives are that both the email and telephone options are manned by highly professional agents, who have an excellent degree of knowledge. Unlike the service at Sportsbet where support agents are sometimes unhelpful. Also, the FAQ section at TAB is extensive and has answers to many common queries. Great if you want to avoid the time needed to contact customer support.

Unfortunately, the email and phone services are not available 24/7. This could cause problems for players placing bets late at night or early in the morning. After all, who wants to encounter a problem with a bet, and be unable to resolve it there and then?

Likewise, the lack of a live chat option means that getting a fast solution to problems is not as easy as it could be. The options are certainly inferior to an operator such as BetVictor, who offer a live chat option and even social media support. So overall, TAB gets a middle-of-the-road score in this category.

Platform and usability

A well-designed and attractive-looking online sportsbook can really enhance your gambling experience. Easy navigation and clearly displayed markets can help create a stress-free betting process.

The TAB NZ website home page displays the main markets for the biggest upcoming fixtures, whilst also providing quick links to other upcoming major events. You can also access your account details and customer support directly from the homepage.

When you reach the event you are looking for, there is a menu at the top of the page displaying the main betting options. You can either click on one of these links, or scroll down to look at the full range of markets.

Finally, it’s time for TAB to land another high score. I found using the TAB website a very enjoyable experience. Finding the event I was looking for was straightforward and the markets were clearly laid out. Even if you are a complete technophobe, you will have no problem navigating TAB.

Likewise, the supporting options such as FAQs and account details were easily accessible from anywhere on the site. You are never more than a click or two away from where you want to be. This puts TAB on a par with other leading operators in New Zealand, such as Bet365.

I was also delighted to see that TAB NZ has a very good mobile platform. This offered a smooth gameplay experience and all the same sports markets as the desktop version of the TAB site. Ideal for anyone looking to play on the go.

If I was being picky, I could say that the TAB website is lacking innovative features. However, overall I was greatly impressed with the performance and usability of the TAB NZ platforms. You are going to have a great time using this app. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said about MyBookie, which doesn’t even offer an app.

FAQs

Is TAB a bookmaker?

Yes. TAB is one of the most popular sports bookmakers in New Zealand. TAB is independently run, but is regulated and overseen by the NZ Department of Internal Affairs. TAB NZ also runs the country’s racing industry. As well as being available online, there are also TAB stores located around the country, as well as trackside outlets at race courses.

Is there a TAB NZ app?

Yes. The TAB mobile app can be downloaded to compatible Apple or Android devices. The mobile app has all of the same markets, features and options as the full desktop TAB website. Alternatively, you can use the desktop version of the TAB website on mobile browsers, as the site has been fully optimized for mobile play.

What is the maximum payout for New Zealanders from TAB?

Many sports betting operators stipulate maximum payouts for winnings. Bookmakers have these limits in place to safeguard them against making large losses. Similarly, they will often place maximum bet restrictions on customers, so that they cannot place bets that will potentially lead to massive wins. At TAB NZ, there are no specified amounts given for maximum payouts, but please check with the operator before placing any large money bets.

Can you use PayPal with a TAB account?

No. The payment options currently accepted at TAB NZ are Visa, MasterCard and online bank transfer. Additionally, you can make physical payments at TAB retail outlets or trackside. Therefore, PayPal is not currently an option available to TAB players in New Zealand for deposits or withdrawals. If this situation changes in the future, we will update our TAB review with full details.

Is TAB NZ government owned?

Yes. TAB NZ is a New Zealand government body. It was formerly known as the New Zealand Racing Board. TAB NZ was established through the Racing Industry Act 2020. TAB New Zealand is also responsible for running the TAB Trackside racing channel in New Zealand. There are currently around 500 TAB sites in New Zealand, this includes trackside betting and TAB retail outlets.
