Wolf Gold is one of the biggest slots to come out of the Pragmatic Play catalogue over the last decade. Released in 2017, it has helped shape a whole wave of similar games, pairing a classic 5×3 layout and North American nature theme with standout features like Giant Symbols, Money Respins, and fixed jackpot prizes.

Wolf Gold review summary

Wolf Gold is a 2017 release by Pragmatic Play. Like all slots from this powerhouse, it features sharp visuals, this time in line with the North American nature theme, and a flexible betting range.

It appeals to a broader player base than most Pragmatic Play slots because it pairs medium-leaning volatility with a 5×3 grid, 25 fixed paylines, Giant Symbols, Money Respins, and fixed jackpots.

If these special features triggered a little more often, or if the base-game payouts carried slightly more weight, it’d be an even better choice for high rollers. But other than that, I can’t say the game leaves much to be desired, as per my Wolf Gold slot review.

Pros

  • Money Respins and Free Spins bonuses

  • 3 jackpots worth up to 1,000x

  • Wide betting range

Cons

  • Special features that rarely hit

  • Low base symbols payouts

  • Max win caps at 5,000x

Wolf Gold comprehensive review

Now, let’s learn more about the Wolf Gold slot gameplay, from its core mechanics and features to how payouts work, where the RTP sits, and what kind of volatility you’re dealing with.

RTP and volatility

The Wolf Gold RTP sits between 96% and 96.1%, which is the industry average. It plays on a standard 5×3 grid with 25 fixed paylines and volatility that ranges from medium to high, meaning you can expect less frequent but solid wins.

Three to five matching symbols can land you a payout, with the Wolf offering the biggest one (20x your bet). However, you’ll need the help of special features for the 5,000x max win.

Time2play Expert Analysis

Wolf Gold plays in line with its stats. The ~96% RTP does sit slightly below the average for Pragmatic slots, seeing that other popular releases like Sweet Bonanza and Gates of Olympus are both at 96.5%. But it feels steady in practice, even across a 100-spin test run.

As for volatility, it leans toward medium rather than high, which worked in my favour. Compared to heavy hitters like Big Bass Splash or Sugar Rush, the pacing felt less punishing, with fewer dry spells. Along with solid payouts, wins showed up often enough to keep things moving, even at stakes around C$100–C$125.

The only thing I’d really change is how often the bonus features trigger, especially since there’s no Feature Buy or Gamble Feature to fall back on. It took a fair stretch of spins to see the Giant symbols alone, never mind the Money Respins.

Bonus features

The Wolf Gold slot comes with four special features: Wilds, Scatters, Giant Symbols, and Money Respins. The former two appear during the base game, and the latter land in separate bonus rounds.

Wilds

Wilds come in the shape of Wolf symbols. They have a two-fold role: they substitute for other base symbols, except for Scatters and Money Symbols, and they carry the highest value out of all other base symbols (1x–20x), so they can deliver massive wins on their own.

Scatters and Giant Symbols

Scatters are orange rock formation icons that appear on reels 1, 3, and 5. If they form a 3-symbol match, they pay out 1x your bet and trigger the Free Spins round.

You enter the Free Spins round with 5 spins. However, you can get 3 more if you land another 3x Scatter match. This opens on a new grid, where a Giant Symbol covers the middle three reels. Create a winning combo with this one, and you’ll get a payout multiplied by all the paylines you’ve covered at once.

Money Symbols and Money Respins

The Money Symbols appear as the Moon and can land on all reels during the base game, carrying values from 1x to 100x your bet.

When you land 6 or more of these on the base grid, you trigger the Money Respins feature.

This bonus round takes place on a new grid filled with nothing but blanks and Money Symbols. You start with 3 respins, and each time a new Money Symbol lands, the count resets while the symbol sticks.

At the end of the round, the values of all Money Symbols on the grid add up and are credited to your balance.

The Mini (30x) and Major (100x) jackpots can also be awarded during the Money Respins round. If the entire grid ends up filled with Money Symbols, you win the Mega Jackpot worth 1,000x your stake.

Time2play Expert Analysis

Besides the Wolf Wilds, which showed up on almost every spin and win, Wolf Gold’s bonus features were playing hard to get. It took me over 50 spins to trigger the Free Spins round and more than double that for the Money Respin feature.

I know that’s fairly typical for titles from Pragmatic Play, but when you’re dealing with a 5×3 medium-volatility game rather than a feature-heavy slot like The Dog House Megaways, that’s a bit hard to forgive.

I can’t complain about the bonus features themselves, though. My first venture into Free Spins landed me C$860 in under 5 spins, and the Money Respins round accrued about C$1,600 after just two respin resets, two of the biggest wins I landed in the game overall.

I just wish I had grabbed at least the tiniest of the jackpots, but none of them made an appearance during my Wolf Gold slot review play.

Symbols and paytable

Wolf Gold features 8 base symbols and 3 bonus ones. The low-paying base symbols are the card faces, A, K, Q, and J, which pay from 0.20x your stake for three of a kind up to 2x your stake for a full five-symbol line.

The high-paying base symbols are Bison, Eagle, Horse, and Cougar, which reward between 0.40x and 20x your stake for a 3-to-5 symbol match on any active payline. The Wolf, Scatter, and Money symbols also appear in the base game, but only the first one delivers payouts. They’re the same as the highest base symbols: 1x to 20x your bet.

The game runs on a 5×3 grid with 25 fixed paylines, paying left to right for 3-, 4-, and 5-symbol combinations. Wins are capped at 5,000x your stake, which comes out to C$625,000 with the maximum bet.

Wolf Gold slot on a mobile device
Time2play Expert Analysis

Wolf Gold rewards 3–5-symbol combinations, which is what you’d expect from a classic 5×3 setup with 25 paylines.

The payouts lean lower than I’d like: the higher-paying symbols peak at 20x, so you really can’t drive massive returns without special feature help. But then again, this isn’t a 6- or 7-reel slot like Sugar Rush 1000 with Scatter Pays or Megaways, so I guess 50x–150x payouts would be too much to expect, especially with Money Respins and Jackpots in play.

That’s also why I was particularly glad to see the Pragmatic Play signature wide betting range. Betting options that stretch between C$0.25 and C$125 make it quite easy to find your niche, whatever your budget and playlist, as well as bag solid wins.

And no, you can’t go after a 20,000x max win, as in Great Rhino Megaways, for instance, but you can still chase wins as big as C$625,000 on medium-volatility terrain, and that was enough to keep me engaged.

How to play Wolf Gold

To play Wolf Gold, launch it on your device, and set your bet size through the plus and minus toggles next to the Spin button.

Don’t let the coin value and coins per line stats throw you off. Since all 25 paylines are in play on every spin, these are displayed simply to keep you informed. Focus on the total bet figure at the bottom, and watch the jackpot values in the background instead. There are 38 options to choose from, so finding your ideal bet shouldn’t be an issue.

Next, press the Spin button and wait for the reels to stop. You’ll see a random symbol combination form across the grid, and a visual effect will highlight any wins you’ve created on the 25 paylines, rewarding you right away.

If the pace feels a bit slow, the Autoplay option below the Spin button can speed things up. It allows up to 500 automated spins, along with adjustable reel speed to suit different preferences.

If anything still feels unclear, the paytable under the “i” button in the bottom left corner lays everything out in detail. Pragmatic Play is known for its detailed and straightforward paytables, so you won’t need any Wolf Gold slot tips after that.

Expert verdict

If you’re not new to the online slots scene, you probably know that neither the North American wildlife theme nor the Money Respins bonus first appeared in Wolf Gold. Both actually came from Aristocrat years before.

But Pragmatic Play’s decision to blend them inside an otherwise straightforward 5×3, 25-payline slot was bold enough to earn it MGA’s title of the game of the year in 2018. Having played it, I have to say it’s well deserved.

Wolf Gold delivers the clean visuals, detailed paytable, and flexible betting range that define many Pragmatic Play releases. Its 5×3 grid with fixed paylines, ~96% RTP, and medium-leaning volatility fare well for casual play. Yet, the Free Spins, Money Respins, and up to 1,000x jackpots add enough suspense to engage reward-motivated players.

I do wish these special features hit more often or that the base symbols offered higher max payouts than 20x, at least. But neither feels like a dealbreaker when I weigh them against everything else the game does well.
