Gates of Olympus slot review

Zeus rules over the reels in Gates of Olympus, Pragmatic Play’s 6×5, high-volatility slot with Tumbling reels, multipliers, and Free Spins.
I play the game to rate its RTP, mechanics, bonus features, and potential wins in this Gates of Olympus slot review.

Highlights
Expert verdict
As a fan of Sweet Bonanza, playing Gates of Olympus did feel familiar and comfortable straight away.
Features like the Tumble mechanic, Free Spins round, and multipliers provide lots of opportunities for wins, while the wider layout makes for a nice change from the usual 5×3 grid.
Despite the dry spells and missing Wild feature, the Pay Anywhere mechanic and above-average RTP help dish out some gains.
Even with its well-worn theme and repetitive gameplay, the slot packs enough of a punch to keep players coming back for more.
- Tumbling reels and multipliers
- Pay Anywhere game mechanic
- Uncommon 6×5 grid
- Underwhelming 5,000x max win
- No Wilds feature
- Expensive Buy feature
Where to play Gates of Olympus
From what I’ve seen, close to 70–80% of Ontario-licensed casinos offer Gates of Olympus. It’s a very popular slot by a very popular provider, so you’ll have no trouble finding a casino which offers it.
I recommend playing Gates of Olympus at any of the three casinos I picked below, since they all offer free demo play and a great collection of slots. Tonybet, in particular, also features Gates of Olympus and other titles from the series in its Drops & Wins category.

RTP, payout, and volatility
Gates of Olympus is a high-volatility slot that comes with a 96.50% RTP, which remains the same during the base game, bonus rounds, and even when the Ante Bet feature is on.
Always check the paytable before you start playing at your casino as there are configurations with lower RTP rates (95.51% and 94.50%).
The 28.82% hit frequency means a winning combo should theoretically land on your reels every three or four spins. On average, the chance of triggering the Free Spins round is 1 in 448 spins.

Maximum win | 5,000x |
Highest-paying symbol | Zeus Scatter |
Volatility | High |
Symbols pay anywhere they land on the 6×5 grid. There are no paylines, so you just need to land 8+ matching symbols anywhere on the reels in one spin.
The maximum win is capped at 5,000x your bet and it can only be triggered in the Free Spins round. The Zeus Scatter is your highest-paying symbol in the base game.
These are the payouts per symbol:
- Blue Gemstone: 8–9, 10–11, 12+ = 0.25x, 0.75x, 2x
- Green Gemstone: 8–9, 10–11, 12+ = 0.4x, 0.9x, 4x
- Yellow Gemstone: 8–9, 10–11, 12+ = 0.5x, 1x, 5x
- Purple Gemstone: 8–9, 10–11, 12+ = 0.8x, 1.2x, 8x
- Red Gemstone: 8–9, 10–11, 12+ = 1x, 1.5x, 10x
- Chalice: 8–9, 10–11, 12+ = 1.5x, 2x, 12x
- Ring: 8–9, 10–11, 12+ = 2x, 5x, 15x
- Hourglass: 8–9, 10–11, 12+ = 2.5x, 10x, 25x
- Crown: 8–9, 10–11, 12+ = 10x, 25x, 50x
- Zeus Scatter: 4, 5, 6 = 3x, 5x, 100x
Payouts rating
- Above-average RTP of 96.50%
- Multipliers can lead to large wins
- Free spins can trigger bigger payouts
- High volatility keeps base game dry
- Many low-paying symbols
- Underwhelming max win
The high variance in Gates of Olympus means a win lands less often — and that was certainly the case for me. After a number of dead spins, I really didn’t want to celebrate with a couple of gemstones either.
The above-average 96.50% RTP works well when paired with the high volatility, though, and that becomes more evident once you hit the Free Spins and multipliers, as I explain later on.
The max win is like Pragmatic Play’s Big Bass Splash or Play’n GO’s Book of Dead. I find this decent but underwhelming when compared to other high-variance options. White Rabbit Megaways has a 17,420x max jackpot, and Relax Gaming’s Money Train 3 goes for 100,000x.
I will say that the highest max wins are normally associated with extreme volatility, though, so I didn’t deduct too many points for this.
Bet levels and features
The minimum coin value is C$0.01 on a 20x bet multiplier, which gives you a total minimum bet of C$0.20. Go up to C$0.50 and 10 coins for a C$100 max bet.
The Buy Feature allows you to instantly trigger the Free Spins round at a 100x bet, so you’ll be paying anywhere between C$20 and C$10,000, depending on your stake.

Stake limits rating
- Wide betting range
- Buy feature available
- Pay Anywhere mechanic
- 100x price tag on buy feature
- High-stakes dry spell possible
I like that Gates of Olympus has a wide betting range, which is a Pragmatic Play hallmark by now. This makes it suitable for both high rollers and casual gamers like me. The minimum bet allows players to get used to how things work before they bet big.
I was also happy to see the Buy Feature, which becomes more and more appealing in a high-volatility slot, but less happy to see the price point it came at. I prefer slots like Extra Chilli Megaways or Dead or Alive 2, which stick to the lower end of the 50x–150x range I normally see.
Not everyone will agree but I like not having paylines and just looking out for matching symbols, so this is a plus in my books. This is partly why I enjoy games like Sweet Bonanza and Sugar Rush, which have the same mechanic.
I started with lower stakes to find my feet with the betting and gameplay, but quickly adjusted to see how things played out with higher bets. The high volatility meant I did see a significant dry spell, which is off-putting when staking high.
Gates of Olympus bonus features
The game’s bonus features include Tumbling Reels, multipliers, and free spins with additional multipliers.

Tumbling Reels
Whenever you score a winning combination, you’ll get a Tumble and the winning symbols will be replaced by new ones. If you land another winning combo with the new symbols, you can trigger another win and Tumble.
Tumbles stop when there are no more winning combinations.
Multipliers
Winged Orb symbols can appear randomly during the base game and the Free Spins round. They come with attached multiplier values that can boost your win by 2x–500x.
If your reels include Orbs with more than one multiplier value, the value is added for a total boost. For example, if you have 10x and 25x values, your win will be multiplied by 35x.
Ante Bet
If you wager an extra 25% of your bet, you can up the ante on your game action through the Ante Bet feature. This increases your chances of triggering the Free Spins round.
Free Spins round
The Zeus Scatter symbol doesn’t just pay. Landing 4, 5, or 6 Scatters triggers the bonus round, which awards you 15 free spins on a 1x multiplier.
Tumbling Reels and Orb Multipliers are still active during the Free Spins feature.
Orb Multiplier values won’t reset like they do in the base game. Instead, the value will increase in increments. You can track its progress on the meter next to the reels.
Landing three Scatters during the Free Spins feature will add another five free spins to your round.
Bonus features rating
- Tumbling Reels in base game
- Base game multipliers up to 500x
- Free Spins bonus round
- No Wilds
- No gamble feature
- Few features in bonus round
I enjoyed the Tumbling reels in the base game because you get double the fun when you score a win. I was lucky enough to land two winning sequences on two successive Tumbles with some mid-range multipliers thrown in the mix.
The randomly unleashed Winged Orb multiplier in the base game is also a great touch, so you don’t have to wait for the Free Spins for some bonus action.
I didn’t initially manage to get enough Scatters to access the bonus round, which is very elusive according to the provider’s stats. I tried the Ante Bet feature and gave the machine a few more spins before finally breaking through.
On paper, the Free Spins round looks like it should be the real deal. There are multipliers, Tumbling reels, and re-triggering scatters. But aside from the increasing values of the Orb symbols, there were no features that belonged specifically to the Free Spins.
Even with the Pay Anywhere mechanic and Tumble feature, I still missed having the good old Wild.
Theme, visuals, and audio
As its name suggests, Gates of Olympus is centered around Ancient Greece. Zeus is the main character and stands on the right, throwing the occasional thunderbolt.
Despite its ancient theme, Gates of Olympus is a modern video slot with advanced animations. These include Zeus’ lightning bolts, and symbols that explode upon winning.

The music goes well with the overall theme and design, with additional flourishes for wins and bonus features.
Audiovisuals rating
- Good quality graphics
- Consistent theme
- The game works well on mobile
- Limited variety of animations
- Repetitive visual effects
I enjoyed the theme of Gates of Olympus, with Zeus hanging around and sending the occasional lightning bolt into the grid. Then again, I prefer how Pragmatic Play applied the theme to the game mechanics in Zeus vs Hades.
The theme is really the only distinguishing feature between this slot and Sweet Bonanza. Gates of Olympus is basically the same gameplay but in an Ancient Greek dress.
Ancient Greece is by no means an uncommon theme in the slot world. Play’n GO, Playtech, and NetEnt all have similar slots. Consider trying Age of the Gods and Divine Fortune especially if you missed the progressive jackpot.
Ultimately, Gates of Olympus’s 2021 release makes it a latecomer to trendsetters like WMS’s Zeus. In terms of design, it holds its own, but the abundance of similar titles can easily make the game feel lacklustre.
Game layout
The Gates of Olympus layout is user-friendly and makes it easy to get started and play without issue.
The game has a 6×5 grid displaying 30 symbols. Beneath it, you’ll find the main game buttons, which are all easily accessible around the screen.
The ‘Spin’ button comes with adjustable plus and minus signs on either side, and lies above the ‘Autoplay’ feature.

Opening the settings gives you further options to adjust sounds or speed up the game play with turbo spin. The info icon opens up a detailed paytable and instruction manual.
On the left, you’ll find the game’s Buy feature and Ante Bet option. During the bonus round, the multiplier value meter will also appear here.
Game layout rating
- Uncommon 6×5 grid layout
- Clean and accessibly layout
- Gameplay speed can be enhanced
- No loss limit settings
- No game history
Gates of Olympus has done well in terms of its layout. The 30-symbol 6×5 grid layout makes a welcome change from lots of video slots.
I rarely have any complaints when it comes to Pragmatic Play’s slot layouts. I found all of the buttons really well-placed for ease of use, particularly when playing on mobile.
I could choose to Skip screen, Turbo or Quick spin options, and adjust Autoplay spins from 10 to (a totally undesirable) 1,000. Here, I’d have preferred more granular settings that allow me to set a maximum loss limit.
Another small gripe is the missing game history, which I’m happy to concede is not a major loss for me.
