Expert verdict

Yes, when it comes to payouts and RTP, this isn’t what the best online slots, or even NetEnt, have to offer. When pitted against other software providers, like BTG or Red Tiger, this NetEnt hit can seem rather basic. Even though the volatility ranges from medium to high, it’s still nowhere near the high volatility of big-win slots either. Still when compared to low-volatility slots like Starburst, where you can only win up to a max of C$50,000, Gonzo’s C$125,000 max win doesn’t seem half bad.

But for me, what makes this slot is by far the Avalanche feature, coupled with the Multipliers and Free Fall functions. Together, they make for a really dynamic game that doesn’t get boring. Add to that the interesting story element of Gonzo the explorer looking for a lost city (El Dorado?) with your aid on his quest, and you have a successfully fun slot.

I’d play it again and again. And I do.

Editor's note

This overview is based on the current offer in Ontario; the information you see, and our toplist, may change as the market grows. Rest assured that we’ll keep our data updated to reflect the latest offer for Canadian players.

As for the rankings, our aim is not to regurgitate our best-casinos list, but to give you a comprehensive overview of which casinos have the best overall offer and have Gonzo’s Quest in their portfolio. If you see a casino here but with a lower score in other categories, it simply means that this casino is a reputable operator where you can play Gonzo’s Quest and other NetEnt games without compromising on quality.

Gonzo’s Quest RTP and payouts

The Gonzo’s Quest RTP is just below the industry average at 95.97%. The slot has medium to high volatility, meaning that although wins are less frequent than a low volatility slot, they have a higher payoff.

The highest paying symbol, the ‘Silver Totem Mask’ in the case of this online slot, will pay out a win of 125x your original stake when it hits five of the same symbol.

Five of the Silver Totem Mask symbols will pay out C$6,250 when you’re playing with the highest possible bet of C$50 per spin/avalanche.

Of course, the probability of getting five of the highest paying symbols in one spin is low, but that’s where the slot game’s Multipliers play a role in keeping the smaller wins coming in.

Payouts rating

78/100 Fair payouts but heavily reliant on bonus features
  • 1,800x max payout in Free Falls
  • Low base-game max win

The Gonzo’s Quest RTP is just below the industry average (96% and above) at 95.97%. Compared to other NetEnt favourite slots like Starburst, it still falls just below its RTP of 96.01%.

Honestly speaking, the percentage difference is so slight it’s basically null and void. Ultimately, they’re both sitting in the same boat and an RTP difference of 0.04% doesn’t mean much unless you’re planning on spinning the reels thousands of times.

As far as other slots and online casino games go, a chance at 125x the wager is a pretty sweet deal.
If you’re playing at C$50, this means the max you can win on Gonzo’s Quest slot is C$125,000 at the highest payout of 125x your original stake. Not too shabby, but pales in comparison to the 1,800x max win in the game’s bonus feature (Free Falls).

Gonzo’s Quest stake limits

Gonzo’s Quest has a bet range between a minimum of C$0.20 and a maximum of C$50.00.

This is decided by adjusting the coin level of the slot (between 1–5), and the bet level (0.01–00.50). Once you’ve settled on the amount you want to spend per spin, you’re ready to start playing.

Stake limits rating

65/100 Not suitable for high rollers
  • C$0.01 line bet
  • Maxes out at C$50/spin
  • Paylines can’t be adjusted

This NetEnt slot is definitely not a high-stakes slot.

With a max bet of C$50, it doesn’t come close to some of the higher volatility slots that high-rollers tend to go for, and it’s not really a candidate for our best payout online casinos either.

The 20 paylines are non-adjustable too, meaning the line bet is your stake divided by 20.

Bonus features

Gonzo’s Quest was a big hit when it came out, and remains a player favourite today, thanks to its use of the Avalanche feature, Multipliers and Free Falls feature.

By far the most important out of them is the Multipliers function, which increases with every Avalanche (i.e. every time you get winning combos of tiles, which cause new tiles to fall into place).

CategoryDetails
Gamble featureNo
Cascading reelsYes
RespinsNo

The Free Fall feature is Gonzo’s Quest’s version of free spins. They work really similarly. You’ll have 10 Free Falls with increased multipliers.

It triggers by getting three Free Fall symbols (a solid gold tile) on a bet line. This will instantly grant you 10 Free Falls. The Free Fall symbol can only appear on reels 1, 2 and 3.

They have to appear one after the other, starting from the leftmost reel. During the Free Falls feature itself, you can win additional Free Falls that keep the round going. Like this, you chances of getting up to 15x multiplier is increased too.

Bonus features rating

80/100 The game’s redeeming features
  • Stacking multipliers
  • Free Falls can be retriggered
  • Avalanches boost wins
  • No respins or other special features

Gonzo’s Quest misses out on some bonus features commonly found in other online casino slots, like bonus rounds or respins, but the combo of the other three still makes it a fun play.

The multipliers, though, are certainly something to look forward to. They can go up to a max of 5x within the main game, but if the Free Falls feature is triggered, they can keep going up to 15x! Multipliers literally multiply your potential wins, so if you get 15x your normal win, you’re looking at a really satisfying cash-out.

I managed to trigger Free Falls six times in just under 250 spins, which is actually pretty good! Makes me think that the game is closer to medium than high volatility.

The Avalanche feature (same thing as Cascading reels), add another dimension to play — keeping those winning streaks extended as much as possible, so no complaints here!

If you prefer something with a lot more feature “punch”, I recommend the Immortal Romance online slot instead.

Audiovisuals

Online slots can easily get repetitive or boring since you’re basically just hitting a button. What makes them stand out is mainly two things: their bonus features, and the audiovisuals.

While Gonzo’s Quest slot isn’t the top slot when it comes to either, it still feels interactive enough to keep things dynamic and engaging.

A view of Gonzo's Quest base-game reels on a mobile phone

As you’re playing the slot, you have Gonzo the conquistador himself hanging out to the left of the tiles. The animation behind this guy is pretty decent. He scratches his beard, pulls out a map every so often to figure out the next step, or usually just looks off to the side at the tiles.

Thematically, this slot is about exploration, jungles and the ancient civilisations of Latin America. The tiles form a wall that are blocking Gonzo from reaching his ultimate destination, a lost city which you get a glimpse of when the avalanches are happening on the reels. Your goal as the player is to help him get to it by removing the tiles from his path.

Gonzo’s Quest doesn’t come with a music track that plays constantly as you’re spinning the reels. The audio of the game is more about sound-effects and adds to the jungle theme. Birds and other animals can be heard in the background, and the sound of exploding tiles when you hit a win is weirdly satisfying.

Audiovisuals rating

87/100 On-theme audiovisuals of high quality
  • Thematic visuals and sound
  • Entertaining storyline
  • Slightly janky on mobile

All in all, Gonzo’s Quest’s audiovisuals are entertaining and immersive to the gameplay, but not out of the ordinary — the overall look and feel is typical of other classics, like the Book of Dead slot.

Still, the audiovisuals are quite on theme. That alone has more of a story-line behind it than most slots. Birds and other animals can be heard in the background, and the sound of exploding tiles when you hit a win is weirdly satisfying.

I’ve encountered no bugs when playing on all my devices, but found some animations to be a bit clanky on my phone (tested on iPhone and Android with the same result). There’s a minor delay in some frame changes, but overall it doesn’t impede gameplay.

Game layout

Since Gonzo’s Quest uses the Avalanche feature, it doesn’t have the normal reels and rows structure. Instead, it comes in a 5×3 grid with 20 non-adjustable paylines.

With each spin, tiles representing the symbols of the slot fall into place on the grid. If you hit a winning combo, the tiles explode and new tiles fall into place instead of them. This creates that ‘avalanche’ effect, where you can theoretically keep winning as long as the tiles keep exploding.

The online slot also comes with the usual Autoplay function. As is normal for slots, from here you can choose how many consecutive spins you’d like the slot to autoplay for you. You can also set loss limits, win limits and also whether it should stop autoplaying once Free Falls is triggered.

Game layout rating

72/100 Intuitive and simple, but not bare bones
  • Has in-built loss/win limits
  • Simple layout
  • No turbo mode

True to the NetEnt brand, the Gonzo’s Quest slot is really easy to navigate and understand thanks to its professional build.

You have all the staples, like autoplay and generic settings, but there’s no Turbo mode and paylines can’t be adjusted. My favourite part is the ability to set loss and win limits, as well as stopping Autoplay on the Free Falls trigger.

In general I don’t advocate for using Autoplay (it’s poor bankroll management), but if you have to… this is a semi-responsible one to use.

The game’s layout also translates well into a mobile interface, perfect for those who prefer gaming on the go via online casino apps.
