Editor's note

The casinos highlighted above are specifically chosen to reflect their slots offer. We display the Games rating to give you a more accurate overview of the casino’s game-library quality.

Where to play free slot games?

Nearly every casino you’ll find will have free-to-play demos of all slots they offer.

You may have to sign up to access them, but the good news is that you can find free slot demos across the web too. Review sites, like Time2play, and social casinos offer a chance to play a variety of slots without spending a dime.

Features of the best online slot casino gameplay  How we rate online slots

There’s no telling just how many different slots there are, but we can fathom a guess. To date, judging by the largest demo libraries I could find, there are somewhere between 25,000 and 33,000 unique slot games.

As of 2025, there are 75 legal online casinos in Ontario, with an average of approximately 2,200 games on offer. Couple that with over 250 slot providers operating in the market… what I’m trying to say is: you’re spoilt for choice.

When rating slots and other popular casino games, I look at several criteria to find the best casinos to play games. Chiefly among them are RTP and bonus features, of course, but I also consider the game layout, audiovisual effects, animation, payouts, special symbols, bet ranges, and repeatability.

1. RTP and payouts

The top online casinos in Ontario have slot games with high RTPs, indicating the potential profitability of a given game expressed in percentages.

If a slot has 99% RTP, it means that the game can return 99% of your investment, on average, over thousands of spins. It’s a statistic, and shouldn’t be used to gauge profitability.

That said, what’s a high RTP? Our slot reviewers park anything over 97% as high, 95–96% as average, and anything below 95% as low.

Interestingly, RTPs aren’t always static. You may have games where the bonus round, for example, has a different RTP to the base game. You may also have games, like Maple Moolah, where the game’s RTP is abysmally low (offset by the odds of winning the massive jackpot).

Examples of high-RTP slots:

  • Cherries

    Mega Joker

A classic fruit slot from NetEnt with three reels, five paylines, and a Supermeter mode that boosts payouts with mystery Joker wins. A progressive jackpot adds excitement, while the RTP ranges from 85.28% to 99%, depending on bet size and strategy.

  • Adventure compass

    1429 Uncharted Seas

This 5-reel, 25-payline slot from Thunderkick features a distinctive hand-drawn nautical theme, with sea creatures and ships navigating stormy waters. Expanding Wilds cover entire reels to enhance wins, while compass Scatters trigger up to 50 free spins. A 98.6% RTP and low volatility make it well-suited for extended play.

  • Palm tree

    Ugga Bugga

A tribal-themed slot from Playtech with an unusual 10-reel setup. Players can hold symbols between spins, increasing win potential. Stacked symbols and a 99.07% RTP make it one of the most unique high-RTP slots.

  • Books

    Book of 99

A 5-reel, 10-payline slot by Relax Gaming, inspired by Greek mythology. The Book symbol acts as both Wild and Scatter, and collecting 99 books triggers Free Spins with an expanding special symbol. With a 99% RTP, it’s one of the highest-paying slots.

2. Game layout

Every slot game has a few rows and reels, which define that game’s layout. The first few video slots had very few reels and rows (typically 3×3).

Today, you’ll find anything from 3×3 classics to massive grid slots and innovative reel mechanics that transform the experience.

When I search for new slots and playspots, I’m looking for variety and clarity, but game interfaces are designed by slot providers — not casinos — so it’s I don’t evaluate casinos based on this. Instead, what I look for is a slots library packed with studios I know and recognize for offering quality above all.

3. Bonus features

When it comes to the best payout casinos in the biz, the chart-topping wins are usually thanks to in-game bonus features.

And there are nearly as any unique features as there are slots! At the core, though, most of them share similar gameplay mechanics. Here are some of the most popular bonus features you’ll encounter, what they do, and games where you can find them:

  • Wilds — Special symbols that substitute for other regular symbols to help create winning combinations. Some Wilds come with extra effects like multipliers or sticky positions.

Found in Starburst, Gonzo’s Quest, and Immortal Romance.
  • Scatters — Symbols that trigger bonuses or free spins regardless of their position on the reels. Often, landing three or more Scatters unlocks special features.

Found in Book of Dead, Cleopatra, and Thunderstruck II.
  • Free spins — A bonus round where you receive a set number of spins without wagering additional money. Free spins often come with extra perks like multipliers, expanding Wilds, or retriggers.

Found in Maple Moolah, Bonanza, and Dead or Alive.
  • Respins/Retriggers — A feature that re-spins selected reels while keeping other symbols in place, potentially leading to better combinations. Common in slots with hold-and-win mechanics.

Found in Jack Hammer, Aloha! Cluster Pays, and Twin Spin.
  • Multipliers — A bonus feature that boosts winnings by a certain factor (e.g., 2x, 5x, or higher). Multipliers can apply to base game wins, free spins, or specific symbols.

Found in Gonzo’s Quest, Thunderstruck II, and Great Rhino Megaways.
  • Stacked symbols — Regular symbols that appear stacked on top of each other, increasing the chances of multiple matching symbols landing at once.

Found in Immortal Romance, Buffalo Blitz, and 88 Fortunes.
  • Expanding/Sliding/Moving symbols — Certain symbols that expand to cover entire reels when triggered, often seen in free spins rounds or “Book of” slots.

Found in Book of Ra Deluxe, Legacy of Egypt, and Rise of Merlin.
  • Cascading/Avalanching/Tumbling reels — Winning symbols disappear and new symbols drop in, allowing for consecutive wins within a single spin. Common in grid slots and Megaways games.

Found in Gonzo’s Quest, Reactoonz, and Jammin’ Jars.
  • Megaways/Win Both Ways/Cluster Pays — Dynamic reel systems that influence how games pay out. Megaways slots change the number of symbols per reel, Win Both Ways allows wins to count from left to right and from right to left, and Cluster Pays form wins in clusters of adjacent symbols rather than paylines.

Found in Bonanza Megaways, Starburst, and Aloha! Cluster Pays.
  • Jackpots — Large prizes that can be won, often through specific combinations or bonus features. Most popular jackpots are progressive, meaning they grow in size with every wager placed.

Found in Maple Moolah, Hall of Gods, and Divine Fortune.
  • Mini games — Interactive bonus rounds that offer a truly different gameplay experience within the slot.

Check out Street Fighter II: The World Warrior Slot, Monopoly Megaways, and Aviator.

“If you’re looking to develop a solid strategy for slots, it’s important to prioritize bonus features rather than relying solely on the RTP (Return to Player). While RTP gives you an idea of the game’s long-term payout potential, it doesn’t tell the whole story when it comes to short-term gameplay or winning big. Bonuses, free spins, and special features can significantly boost your chances of winning in a single session, and that’s where you can find real value.

Bonus rounds can bring in large multipliers, free spins, or other features that can dramatically increase your winnings which is something RTP alone can’t achieve. Personally, I focus on finding games with engaging bonus rounds that offer re-triggerable free spins, expanding wilds, or jackpot features, which can lead to bigger payouts over time. I play at Lottoland, but most online casinos should have similar bonuses for their slots.

In this regard, I recommend Starburst and Big Bass Bonanza as both have a lot of bonus features that you can take advantage of to hopefully win more.”

4. Stake limits and maximum wins

Most slot games have a wide range of bet sizes, ranging from as low as C$0.01 to over C$50.

Sure, I love to see a penny slot come my way, but that’s not the case for most players. On average, most online slots have a minimum bet of C$0.10–C$0.20, with a few outliers going up to C$0.50–C$1.00.

As far as maximum bets go, C$100 is a standard cap. Quite a few games go above that, but Ontario casinos generally opt for lower ranges (same as for jackpots).

Now on to the juicy part: just how much can you win? Of course, it’s impossibly to quantify the true win potential of a given game, but we do have access to the games maximum win cap, usually expressed as a multiplier of your stake.

I always compare like with like. If I’m rating a grid slot with high volatility, I’ll compare it to payouts of other high-volatility grid slots.

That said, expect to see a WIDE range from game to game. I’ve seen everything from 100x to eight-figure lump sums as top prizes.

5. Audiovisuals

Slots with stunning visuals, graphics, and animation will always be winners in my book. Regardless of the genre or style of play, experiencing high-quality production makes gameplay that much more enjoyable.

That said, this is highly subjective! As far as I’m concerned, we’re looking for all the hallmarks of our list of highest quality casinos, where games showcase crisp graphics, smooth animation, excellent design, and intuitive interfaces.

Notable online slots of high quality include Starburst, Honey Rush, and Viking Runecraft.

One of my favourite games prized for audiovisual quality is Street Fighter II: The World Warrior Slot.

Inspired by one of the greatest video games of all time and the most important and influential fighting game, this slot embodies everything that we grew up to love in the original.

While it’s not the best-paying slot out there, the graphics and sound are perfectly loyal to the original theme. Every round feels like a blast from the past in all the good ways — and these are the hallmarks of a fantastic, audio-visually rich game.

6. Repeatability

The most subjective criteria I evaluate is repeatability. After all, whether you come back to a game or not is heavily dependent on your preferences — which are likely to differ from mine!

When reviewing slots, our team looks for engagement. Is the game fun to play? Does it offer enough variety of features and rewards to keep the average player engaged? Are the graphics, sound, and interface user-friendly enough not to impede on or hinder gameplay in any way?

If we answer “yes” to all of these, then it’s likely that our recommendation will work for you too.

Our top tips for winning on slots

Online slots can be complex.

While our team of reporters does their best in demystifying all the special features and bonuses, the best thing you can do for your win potential is educate yourself.

Here are some tips to consider before you set the reels on fire:

  • Set up your gambling limit.
  • Read online reviews and watch videos to understand how slots work.
  • Practice in the free-to-play demo mode.
  • Pick slots with high RTP (over 96%).
  • Study the paytable and understand how symbols pay before you play.
  • Go for games with low to medium volatility, especially if you’re a new player.
  • Look for slots that have Wilds and other special features that boost wins.
  • That said, complex slots often have lower payout percentages. Look for balance of simplicity and payouts.
  • Stay informed about game updates; new versions may offer better RTPs or features.
  • Pay special attention to game rules if betting on progressives! You have to max bet on many of them to be eligible for the top prize.

FAQs

How do online slots work?

Online slots use Random Number Generators (RNGs) to determine spin outcomes, ensuring fairness and unpredictability. Each time you spin the reels, you set the RNG in motion. If the outcome of your spin satisfies the wining conditions (which vary from game to game), then you will pocket a payout.

Are slot games easy to play?

Yes and no! While many slots resemble classic slot machines, with simple gameplay and easy-to-learn rules, newer games tend to have an added layer of complexity.

That’s not necessarily a bad thing! These slots are packed to the brim with bonus features, like Free Spins rounds, that can help amp up your entertainment factor. If you want to try new online slots, real-money wagers can be put on hold while you check out the game for free through demos.

Can you win real money playing online slots?

Yes, you can win real money playing online slots. Winning is never guaranteed, and the size and frequency thereof depends on RTP, volatility, bonus features, and chance.

What are some popular online slots?

Starburst, Gonzo’s Quest, Book of Dead, and Big Bass Bonanza are timeless classics that most players enjoy.

How often do progressive jackpots hit?

Rarely, but it depends. If you’re eyeballing Maple Moolah, expect months on end before the next drop. But if you’re willing to consider smaller prizes, jackpot slots from Red Tiger and BF Games sometimes have weekly, daily, and even hourly jackpot drops.

Can I increase my chances of winning at slots?

Not directly, but choosing high RTP slots and managing your bankroll wisely helps.

Should I always bet max on slots?

Only on progressive jackpot slots, where max bets are often required for the top prize. Check the rules before placing your stake!

Do online slots have hot and cold streaks? Are slots rigged? Are there patterns? What is the best time to play?

No, no, no, and none. While players may perceive certain patterns and streaks, each spin outcome is random which guarantees that there are no patterns, no best times to play, and no rigging of any kind.

This applies to all legal online casinos, where all games on offer must be regularly audited for fairness.

What’s the worst slot game to play?

Anything with a low RTP and a lack of bonus features.

There’s no single “worst slot of all time”, but ones like Golden Goddess (91.01%), Action Jack (92.34%), and Pixies of the Forest (93.95%) are notorious for their hard-to-hit wins.
