This review is based on the operator’s current offer in Ontario, Canada. Data and analysis below are accurate at the time of publishing, but may be subject to change as the operator’s offer expands.

Expert verdict

Part of the fun of this casino is the fact that it’s one of the very few local Canadian casinos. It’s grown up in the country and really aims to cater to its Canadian players as much as it can. That being said, it’s still early days.

The game library is achingly small at the moment, though there is a good ratio of providers present. This does lend itself to the assumption that more games will be added as the casino grows, so we won’t write it off just yet.

Elsewhere, things also remain relatively average. There’s no 24/7 support at this time, but at least there are three different contact options if things go wrong. In short, it’s a fairly inoffensive online casino that has a more homely feel to it. Give it a few years, and it might compete with the best.

Games: Choose from 150 online casino hits

When it comes to NorthStar’s games, there’s a lot to be desired here. Currently, the casino has just 150 online games available across a number of different gaming categories. Although they are quite diverse, they’ve got nothing on BetMGM or PartyCasino. Unlike the sports betting offer, NorthStar’s casino proposition is not so appealing to experienced casino players.

Interestingly, the focus is not actually on online slots. Out of the 150 online casino games, only 60 of them are actually slots which was a big surprise. In fact, the online live casino section nearly matched this number with a whopping 50 games on offer.

This actually sets the operator’s live casino apart from many of the others, notably online casinos like LeoVegas, which are significantly smaller in their live game collection. However, the NorthStar’s platform is let down by the small size of some of its other game genres such as its online casino poker collection.

Currently, there is only one online video poker game, Jacks or Better, on offer, though this is better than nothing. Other areas that are also lacking include keno, scratch cards and lottery games, all of which are completely absent from this online casino.

As we continue this NorthStar Bets online casino review, we do want to point out that this online casino is still brand new. While other sites like PartyCasino or BetMGM have come roaring right out of the gates, they have a huge casino brand influence behind them already. We’re ready to give NorthStar Bets Ontario a chance.

Games rating

60/100 Small but diverse game selection
  • Popular jackpots available
  • Strong live casino
  • No bingo or scratch cards
  • Just 60 slots

I will admit it, the 150 online casino games available at the NorthStar mobile casino mean the games library is somewhat lacking. Really, we want to see a casino with at least 600 games available for it to get a good score with us. And, as such, this casino really doesn’t cut it – pretty much any casino on our top online casinos list is going to trump NorthStar Bets.

But, instead of being so negative and noting what is lacking, I am going to look on the bright side here. This casino has seven providers across 150 games. This means 21 games on average per provider, which is a pretty good ratio.

It’s actually vastly better than some of the bigger online casinos that have more games, but fewer providers. This leads me to believe that this casino is likely to keep growing. Although there’s no ‘new’ section as yet, I am sure it will come.

In terms of what is actually available, there are three different slot categories. These were a little confusing initially as I wasn’t sure what the difference was between ‘slots’ and ‘premium slots’. Turns out that the latter NorthStar Bets Ontario games are all from Playtech.

And, speaking of Playtech, this provider really does shine here. If you head to the jackpot section, you can find all the Age of the Gods jackpots, which is a really nice addition. Plus, you can see the latest jackpot prize, which I really liked.

When I headed to the table game section, I admit I wasn’t looking for much. And truth be told, I was right. This section is definitely the most lacklustre with just a few online roulette and blackjack games with a single Jacks or Better video poker option.

However, the live casino pulls some surprises out of the bag. There are over 50 titles here and these cover an array of games. These include a number of top Playtech game-show-type games too, which do pull up the game score in our NorthStar Bets Ontario casino review. All in all, if game’s is what you’re looking for, then we recommend SpinGenie and bwin.

Software providers

All of NorthStar games come from just 7 providers, which is really rather a small number. If you look at sites like Royal Panda, PartyCasino and BetMGM, then there are over 30 providers available. Get in touch with the operator’s customer service to find out more about their providers.

Despite using the services of some of the smaller game providers, these are still all relatively well-known in the iGaming world. However, it’s Playtech that really stands out here, especially in the Northstar Bets live casino section. Furthermore, the casino itself does highlight this big-name brand.

The smaller providers are still not to be sneezed at though. In fact, some of these, like Big Time Gaming, have been very influential in what they offer game-wise. It’s thanks to its partnership with BTG that this casino has a range of popular Megaways slots for example.

Rounding out the providers are IGT, WMS and Scientific Games. Each of these providers actually has a large array of really excellent games available. We’d like to see more of their games on offer though, but maybe that will come in the future.

No matter that these games come from some of the smaller studios, all the games are still mobile compatible. In fact, the providers have made sure their games use HTML5, even the online live dealer games. So you can play, make NorthStar Bets payments, and more, all from the app.

Impressively, even with just these seven providers, NorthStar Bets casino has managed to do wonders with its game collection. There are a diverse set of games here, just not that many within each category. And, the strong use of Playtech means excellent online jackpots are available too.

Available software

Software rating

65/100 Good provider to game ratio
  • Playtech powers the live games
  • Good set of Playtech jackpots
  • Very limited number of games
  • More top providers needed

Despite not having that many providers, NorthStar Bets casino still manages to be very diverse in its online game options, a fact I truly appreciate. Just like I enjoy the deposit options – available on the NorthStar Bets platform. However, I have to say that there aren’t many of them available either.

While there were only a few providers, I really did like the fact that the ratio of providers to games offered is actually very high. With just 150 games and 7 providers, we’re looking at around 20 games per provider, which is a good start.

It also indicates to me that there is the definite prospect of growth. First, more games can be added from each provider. And second, more providers can be added. I’d like to see a better balance in the provider-game ratio with something along the lines of 40 games per provider, like most other Ontario online casinos.

I did also enjoy the lean toward Playtech here though. In fact, the entire live dealer casino is from Playtech, so you know there are some good games on offer. I spent a pleasant time sifting through the live games and found the choice to be very comprehensive.

The slant towards online casino games by Playtech also works in NorthStar Bets Ontario’s favour when it comes to the online jackpots on offer too. In fact, there are more jackpots here than at some of the casinos with more providers. This means that NorthStar Bets casino beats out the likes of DraftKings in this area.

Payments: Popular banking methods

The selection of NorthStar Bets Ontario payment methods on offer is rather small. There are just five for you to use. This is actually on the bottom end of the spectrum and really, we normally don’t recommend that you play somewhere with so few options.

That being said, the banking options NorthStar Bets offers do cover most of the main casino payment types as you can make credit and debit card payments easily. These are done through either Mastercard or Visa, which most banks and online casinos accept. And, this means your NorthStar payments are secure.

The operator is one of the casinos that accept eCheck, iDebit and instant banking options, all of which are not always found at other online casinos. These offer completely different transaction types, which means that you do have a little more choice when making a NorthStar Bets deposit.

Finally, the payment options also include Interac. This is the one Canadian-specific payment method offered and it does mean that you can make swift, secure online payments. It’s also well-established within the country, making it even easier to set up and use.

The minimum limits are also decent. Both deposits and withdrawals have a minimum of C$10 in place. On top of that, there are no fees to speak of, unless your bank puts any in place. Finally, there is a 4-5 day withdrawal turnaround.

While these options can be used for NorthStar Bets deposits, the casino wasn’t entirely clear if all of them can also be used for withdrawals. From experience, it’s a good idea to check whether Mastercard withdrawals are permitted as they often aren’t.

Payments rating

75/100 Decent options but slow payment times
  • Works with Mastercard and Visa
  • Low minimum deposit
  • Payment policies are transparent
  • No crypto-based payments
  • Slow withdrawal processing times

Even if there are only a small number of online payment methods available, I want to see that the providers are offering swift and secure payment options. For this NorthStar Bets review, I found that this is indeed the case, which was a relief.

The big downside here is, of course, the limited number of payment options that NorthStar Bets offers. I found it lacking, especially if you take a look at PartyCasino where they have over 10 different online payment methods covering almost every type you could want to use. Similarly, casinos like bet365 offer nearly every payment method under the sun, but that comes with territory gained with years of building a solid reputation.

I guess at least there are two different card payment options and the ability to use Interac. But really, this was not enough to get me to score this very high, which is why the Northstar Bets payments section doesn’t get anywhere near top marks.

The minimum deposit and withdrawal limits were great though. But these are pretty much standard these days, so I didn’t expect anything higher. If a casino was to have more than C$10 as a minimum deposit, I’d not be very happy.

Where the casino disappointed me further was in the withdrawal times. I really like to see under 2 days, but here it’s as many as 5 days before you can get your winnings. The lack of payment options contributes to that as there are no fast withdrawal methods offered.

Safety: Healthy and responsible gambling

NorthStar Bets Canada offers a solid, unassuming, secure gaming interface. There’s not really much it can do to go above and beyond though. That being said, it does hold the required Ontario iGaming license in order to operate within the province legally.

On top of the license, the site also has specific SSL encryption protocols in place too. And this means that your private data is kept secure when you are playing online. It’s a requirement of the license and prevents third parties from accessing your data.

Finally, this casino also uses top software providers and makes sure that they are regularly audited for gaming fairness. Additionally, there is a privacy policy in the footer detailing how your data is collected, stored and used when you sign up and join.

Safety rating

84/100 Safe and secure gambling interface
  • Games are regulated
  • Adheres to provincial laws
  • Good responsible gaming pages
  • Security info is hard to locate

I can’t really say that I like the fact that the casino is licensed within Ontario because I wouldn’t recommend any casino if it wasn’t. I guess what I can say is that I am glad it has taken the appropriate steps to follow the Ontario gaming laws.

In terms of security, there is no actual information provided regarding the auditing process. I am only assuming that this is in place simply because all the software providers are always regulated. Therefore, the casino must do it to remain in line with regulations.

When it comes to the rest of the site though, everything is very transparent and easy to find. I could easily access the Privacy Policy from the footer of the main page. Here I found all the information about how personal data is used.

It’s also here that I accessed all the responsible gambling information. I was very impressed here too as you can easily find all you need to know about playing safely. There’s even a clickable RGC link too, which is part of the reason for this high score.

Mobile features

Impressively, all the games available on the desktop site can be accessed via your mobile. This isn’t just the slots, but also the virtual table games. You can also play live dealer games on the go as well. In fact, this sets Northstar Bets mobile casino apart from sites like Unibet where only two-thirds of the game library is mobile accessible.

Not only does this casino have an app, but there’s also a strong mobile browser version of the site as well. Both mobile options load well and follow the same layout and design as the desktop version of the site. This means there’s no need to learn a new layout.

That being said, there are still some niggles with the Northstar Bets mobile app. In fact, sometimes it really is a bit glitchy particularly when it comes to the iOS version. Hopefully, these issues will be smoothed out in the future.

Generally though, the navigation through Northstar Bets mobile casino is simple and the app isn’t too cluttered so that you can find all the different features you need quickly. But, like the desktop version, the design is somewhat dated, which is a little bit of a letdown.

A big plus here is that not only are all the games available on the app, but all the different Northstar Bets payment options, support and so on are available too. Essentially, it really is just a scaled-down version of the desktop site, it’s just a shame that the desktop also needs work.

Mobile rating

61/100 Decent mobile app; some glitches
  • All games available on mobile app
  • Easy to use
  • Fully Android and iOS compatible
  • FAQ is thin on the app

I did like the mobile version of this site, to a point. Unfortunately, the dated design really does let this app down (as well as the desktop site). But, at least I can say that it is the same across both platforms.

The Android app works well and loads relatively smoothly. But, if you’re like me, and you use an iPhone, well, there are some issues. The iOS app is a bit glitchy at times and does make the whole site look a little unprofessional.

The mobile app does regain a few points for having simple navigation, though. But I think this is more due to the fact that the overall interface is rather minimal and simplistic. It’s not really something that draws me as a whole.

More points were earned for having all the casino games on the app. However, I would be seriously disappointed if they didn’t. After all, there are only 150 online games on offer, so they ought to have them all on the Northstar Bets mobile casino app.

All of this wasn’t really enough to save this app, in my opinion. There’s a lot of work that needs to be done here, maybe even an overhaul of the way the website looks. Strangely, the FAQ was also lacking on the app when compared to the desktop version, so not everything is transferred over either.

Customer support

Getting in touch with casino staff is a very important feature, and we check this on every single casino we rate. Here, there were three different methods available for contacting the Northstar Bets customer service team, which instantly was a good sign for us, as this is our preference.

As a Canadian player, you can get in touch using a toll-free phone line, email or live chat. The only downside here is that the online support is not available 24/7. This is something we always hope casinos avoid when we rate them.

Nevertheless, when the support is operating, it’s actually pretty great. The response time of the live chat is just a couple of minutes. And, any query is met with competent helpful staff to get you back on track and gaming as soon as possible.

If the Northstar Bets customer service is closed when you have an issue, there’s no need to panic right away. And that’s because there is a decent FAQ available. This is easily found in the footer section of the site and has a whole host of different categories and questions.

Though there’s the lack of 24/7 support, NorthStar Bets actually does compete well with some of the other online casinos in Ontario. The very fact that it has three contact options means that it beats out the likes of LeoVegas and Slots Magic right away.

Support rating

70/100 Decent in general, could do with more
  • Good support
  • Fast response time
  • No 24/7 live chat

I must say I was torn with the rating on this one. On the one hand, there is no 24/7 support and that’s a pretty big no-no in my book. But, NorthStar Bets did try to pull this back with not one, not two, but three support options.

Additionally, when the live chat is operational, it’s a delight. I got online and sent a few questions their way. Happily, I got a response within minutes. And, the staff member (real!) on the other end was very helpful, answering all my questions efficiently.

I also loved the fact that there is an email and phone number available as well. This really helped to propel this score just that little bit higher. It was also great not to need an account to access any support.

So, despite the lack of round-the-clock support, I did end up giving NorthStar Bets online casino a decent score for this. I mean, it really comes down to the delightful staff helping me out. So, don’t panic here. Help is definitely on hand at NorthStar Bets in Canada.

Usability

For the most part, this NorthStar Bets review found that the site is actually very easy to use. The design is a little dated though, especially given the newness of this online casino. However, there are clear menus in place, making it easy to search each game category quickly.

However, being able to find games was also quick simply because there weren’t many of them. There is a search function too, but really, it’s actually easier to scroll through the game list and see what they have that way instead.

Usability rating

74/100 User-friendly interface navigation
  • Simple search bar
  • Distinct game categories
  • Easy sign-up process
  • No filters

This feature got a relatively decent score from me because it really was easy to get about. However, I did find that the site does have a bit of a dated feel, and there were times when the layout seemed to shift as it loaded.

The game menus were very clear though, outlining each of the different game categories nicely. Within these categories, it was easy just to scroll down and see what was on offer. Of course, I did try out the search bar too, but I was mostly disappointed when it came to the games I hoped to find.

Other areas of the site were similarly easy to navigate through though. And this I did like, as it is up to par with other new casinos in Ontario, like PointsBet and ComeOn. It was also easy for anyone interested in sports betting to get to the NorthStar Bets sportsbook. Additionally, I could find all the main security and privacy policy information clearly listed in the footer too — not too much searching needed for that.

Overall though, this site does need a little bit of work in my opinion. It feels just a bit more cobbled together when compared to some of the other sites, such as DraftKings, FanDuel or SlotsMagic. Maybe I’ll give it a few years to see if it can improve.

FAQs

Is it legal to play at NorthStar Bets in Ontario?

Yes, it is. In line with the gaming laws of Ontario, NorthStar Bets Ontario online casino does have an Ontario iGaming license. This can be found in the footer of the main site. Better still, you can actually click on the seal, and you will be taken to the license page, so you can check that the casino really does have the authority to operate. This license also means that the casino adheres to a plethora of player security requirements.

What games does NorthStar Bets offer?

This online casino may have a small selection of games — there are just 150 on offer — but this selection is actually surprisingly diverse. The main games on offer are slots, and you can find standard ones, premium (translate to Playtech titles) and jackpots. Then there are the virtual table games, which are mostly blackjack and roulette though there is a lone video poker game and some baccarat. Lastly, there’s a 50-game strong live casino. In contrast, the NorthStar Bets sportsbook is well stocked.

How can I withdraw winnings at NorthStar Bets?

There are just five different payment methods at NorthStar Bets. But, all of them can be used for withdrawing any winnings you may earn. This means that it’s really easy for you to choose exactly which of the payment methods you want to use for all your transactions. You don’t need to think ahead and pick a different option for withdrawing any winnings, which we really like to see at any online casino.

When did NorthStar Bets launch?

Though this is actually a local casino brand and company, NorthStar Bets Canada was actually one of the slowest to arrive on Ontario’s iGaming scene. Even though gaming became legal in the province in early April 2022, this casino didn’t actually get up and running until the latter part of the month. It is also lagging a bit behind the other sites in terms of what it offers too, but that will, hopefully, change.

Is there a NorthStar Bets mobile app?

Yes, there is. NorthStar Bets actually has an app for both the casino and the sportsbook, which makes it really great to jump between the two platforms. The app works relatively well too and has all the same casino games on it as the desktop site. It’s easy to navigate, though there are occasional glitches, so there is some work that needs to be done here in order to make it a really top app.
