October is an eventful month for Canada – NHL season begins, everyone dresses up for Halloween, and families all over the country get together for Thanksgiving. As we celebrate Thanksgiving with our loved ones and reflect on the holiday, households across Canada are stirring up side dishes to accompany the turkey. Since preferred side dishes can vary from region to region and culture to culture, we wanted to find out what the most popular side dish is for each province and territory.
The most popular side dish across Canada seems to be stuffing – which is no surprise as it is a long-time classic. Almost half of the provinces (4), and over half of the territories (2) can’t seem to get enough of it.
Pumpkin pie was the second most popular side dish across Canada in 3 provinces. Again, not shocking as it is a very popular dessert to have for Thanksgiving. Cranberry sauce is the most popular side dish in both Manitoba and New Brunswick.
Both Saskatchewan and Nunavut seem to have their own take on their preferred side dish. Although mashed potatoes are another classic Thanksgiving dish, Saskatchewan was the only province that proved its love for mashed potatoes. Nunavut’s most popular Thanksgiving side dish was oatmeal cookies.
Methodology
To find out what the most popular Thanksgiving side dish in each province and territory is, we used Google Trends to analyze the search volumes for Thanksgiving recipes in the 3 weeks leading up to Thanksgiving in 2021.
