Online blackjack games: variants

Variety’s the spice of life, and the casino world is no different. The core rules of online blackjack are pretty much always the same; 21’s the magic number. Start off with 2 cards, then yell ‘hit me’ for more, till you’re close enough to the coveted digits.

But it’s a bit like Westerns or Buddy Cop movies; adding in some differences prevents a great formula from getting stale. Let’s fry up the options, pop ‘em on a plate, and see what you’re hungriest for.

American blackjack

Also known as Classic blackjack. Players get 2 cards, as does the dealer. Both of the players’ cards are dealt face up, but only one of the dealers’ is. If the dealer’s first card is an ace, the dealer can peek at their second card. If it has a value of 10, they get an instant blackjack and end the round early. Players have the option to make an insurance bet if the dealers’ first card is an ace, however this is not recommended, as it’s statistically likely to lose you money in the long run.

European blackjack

Similar to American, only the dealer is dealt one card initially. The risky part of that means that players have the opportunity to increase their wagers by doubling or splitting, and then watching the dealer get a blackjack anyway. Logic would advise you to not double or split if the dealer’s first card is an Ace. (You could extend it to not doubling / splitting when the dealer has a 10, but there’s a much higher shot that the second card has a value of 10 than is an Ace. Reason being, picture cards have a value of 10, so there’s 5x as many 10s as Aces.)

Live blackjack

You’ll find a fair few different versions of this around, and the live game isn’t stuck to just 1 set of rules. The difference here is that rather than an automated software, you’ll have a live stream of a dealer putting out the cards for you, bringing that brick-and-mortar experience into your home. When the casino’s studio is set up by a great live casino provider like Evolution, you know you’re in for a good time.

Single Deck blackjack

This is played with just one deck, while 6 or even 8 is pretty common in most other variants. In single-deck, dealers usually hit on a soft 17, while they usually stand on that in Classic. It reduces variation and makes it easier to guess what cards are coming up, which lowers the house edge further. However, some casinos change it up to compensate. One common plan of attack is casinos paying 6:5 on a blackjack rather than 3:2. But, if it’s all standard rules, Single Deck blackjack technically has a lower house edge.

Multi-hand blackjack

In this version, you can play multiple hands at once. You are betting more per turn, which means there’s an increased risk, but there’s also a higher chance to cover your losses by winning other hands, and there’s the potential for bigger wins. Usually, 3-5 hands are available, allowing you to bet different amounts on each hand, and use different or complementary strategies between them. Splitting is still an option in multi hand blackjack, so you could ostensibly be playing 10 hands at once if you’re both lucky and brave.

Perfect pairs

Perfect pairs is similar to classic blackjack, but with a spicy little twist. You’ll have the opportunity to make a side-bet on whether or not the 2 cards you’ll be dealt will be showing the same number. Sounds like a long shot? That’s because it is. But if you get 2 of the same number, your payout is 5:1. If you land 2 of the same number, and the same color, you get 10:1. If you land a ‘perfect pair’, that is, same number, same suit, your payout is 30:1.

Blackjack casino bonuses breakdown

Let’s talk facts.

First, what are blackjack casino bonuses?

They’re offers put forward by operators, which allow you to play the game and possibly win real money. Instead of directly betting with your own deposited funds, the casino will pad or replace your cash with a virtual bonus currency. That means that you’ll be able to play while risking the casino’s cash instead of yours.

However, bonuses are subject to terms and conditions, in order to prevent players from just showing up to the casino, skimming a bunch of bonus cash, and walking out.

What types of bonuses can you use for online blackjack? Let’s start with welcome bonuses. You will almost never see blackjack-specific welcome bonuses. Sometimes you’ll see ‘free chips’ bonuses, but they’re incredibly rare in the US. That leaves you with bonus cash, which normally comes in two forms: deposit matches, or no deposit bonuses. Most legal US casinos, like NJ, MI, PA or WV online casinos, usually offer at least one of these.

Deposit matches will match the cash you deposit into the casino, usually at a rate of 100%, up to a certain limit. The top places in the US tend to have limits of over $750, meaning if you put in $750, you’ll have $1,500 to play with. No deposit options are much smaller, usually $10-$30, since they require no player input.

So what makes a good online blackjack bonus? The amount of money is obviously one perk — $1,000 is more than $100. Next is wagering requirements; you’re going to want these to be as low as possible. A wagering requirement of 1x means you have to wager your bonus cash once before you can cash it out, while 60x… means there’s a higher risk of losing. Anything under 15x is top-quality in the US.

There’s a twist though. Card + table games online, especially blackjack, usually don’t contribute fully to wagering requirements. This is because they have a much lower house edge than games such as slots, scratch cards etc. Hence, blackjack usually contributes at a percentage, and 10% is the standard. Now 10% is fine, but some spots let you up that to 25% or more, for example, Golden Nugget .

For existing player promotions, things tend to pop up occasionally, especially at top casinos, but not much of it is regular. Unibet gives you $5 a week to use on live blackjack, and sometimes does deposit reloads, giving you an extra 25% bonus cash on some deposits. Spots like Borgata, BetMGM and SugarHouse have loyalty programs which award bonus cash, but be sure to read the T&C’s.

Blackjack tournaments happen sometimes, but there aren’t any legal US casinos running those daily, or even regularly at this point. Some offshore ones do, but seriously, don’t play at those. They’re murky af. As we’re writing this, casinos with recent blackjack-specific promos / tournaments are SugarHouse and FanDuel .

What to look for in a blackjack bonus:

Playing for free vs for real money

So, should you play online blackjack for real money, or should you stick to free versions? There’s certainly merit to both choices, but we recommend trying it for free first. Reasons being:

1. There’s a skill component to blackjack if you want optimal returns. Practice helps. 
2. Even if you’re already a blackjack pro, it’s unlikely you’ll know the mechanics of each RNG blackjack game, what all the buttons do, and how to make certain plays (e.g., splitting). Sure, it doesn’t take long to figure out, but an early misclick could cost you a few bucks if you go all in. Learn the controls first.
3. There’s just lots of different games out there, you don’t know which one you like best yet. Why risk money on that when you could learn it for free?

What about real money online blackjack? There are plenty of perks to playing that, the most obvious one being that you’ll have a shot to win real money playing online blackjack. You’ll also have access to more games, since casino games are designed for the real money bracket, and free versions aren’t added to all games.

US online blackjack: Is it safe and legal?

In a word, yes. But you need to know the right places to look. Just googling something like Online Blackjack Gambling and heading into whatever comes up first isn’t likely to be your best option. There’s a reason for this:

Until 2013, online casinos were illegal in the US, but there was a lot of legal grey area around offshore casinos. They weren’t subject to US legislation, but allowed (and still allow) US players to play. Since offshores have been around for a lot longer than fully legal US-based, regulated blackjack casinos, they have a more established place in web search results, which means you could end up there pretty easily if you’re not careful.

Why do you want to avoid them?

They’re not subject to the strict fairness testing required by US casinos, and if they are being unfair, there’s a lot less you can do about it — they’re outside our legal jurisdiction. In fact, most US states that legalized online casino gambling also specifically outlawed offshores in the process. If you live in a state such as Mississippi for example, you can still play blackjack at social and sweepstakes casinos. 

How best to avoid them?

Well, we’re an option. Time2play never recommends offshores, and we stick only to legal, licensed casinos that are specifically regulated for each state they operate in. If you want another option, or even to just check our work, state governing boards keep lists of licensed operators available on their websites.
