Golden Nugget is a staple of the gambling world and can trace its roots back to 1946 in Downtown Las Vegas. The original building still stands to this day. Will the online sportsbook have the same longevity?

It’s a lofty goal for sure, but the Golden Nugget online sportsbook does have quite a lot going for it. A user-friendly interface, availability in multiple states, and its impressive Golden Lines boosts all paint a positive picture for this sportsbook. However, there are some areas where Golden Nugget is lacking, especially with its actual sports selection.

Let’s dive right into this Golden Nugget online sportsbook review and kick things off with a look at their bonus offerings.

Pros and cons

  • Extremely user-friendly
  • Award winner
  • Rewarding promotions
  • Only 17 sports

Expert verdict

Coming in at an overall score of 86%, it kind of feels like Golden Nugget should have scored higher. After all, I have spent the last 3 sections singing Golden Nugget’s praises, and in fact, all three of those sections scored in the 90s. But there’s an elephant in the room that unfortunately lowers the score considerably.

It’s just hard to recommend a sportsbook that is lacking in the actual sports section.  Having a good selection of sports should be the top priority for any sportsbook. All the popular options are there mind you, so if you’re just there for the NFL then you’ll certainly be satisfied. For the player who wishes to experiment and go wild with different sports, however, they will simply have to look somewhere else.

Still, the rest of the sportsbook is pretty great. A ton of user-friendly tools and features, decent payouts, a streamlined app, and an FAQ that could double as a library all paint a glowing picture for Golden Nugget sportsbook. There’s a brilliant sportsbook here just waiting to burst out of its cocoon, and with just a few more sports Golden Nugget could easily top our list as one of the best sportsbook sites.

Looking back, I can see now how Golden Nugget has been around since the 1940s. The brick-and-mortar building has passed the test of time, and with just a bit more work and patience, this site could easily pass that test too.

Golden Nugget online sportsbook available states

  • Golden Nugget operates in New Jersey, Michigan, West Virginia, Virginia, Nevada. However, the Nevada site first requires that you go and register in person at the brick and mortar building.  It’s pretty much impossible to access the site if you’re not in Nevada, so most players may have to make do with the other 4 sites.

This review is based on the New Jersey Golden Nugget online sportsbook, the differences with the other sites are listed below:

Golden Nugget bonuses: $250 Free Bet

Bonuses can make or break any sportsbook, and more often than not, they are the first thing that a player looks for when entering a site. There’s a reason we always put this section first in the reviews, after all. So how does Golden Nugget compare to others?

Well, on the welcome bonus front, it’s a pretty decent betting offer. All first-time players will get a first bet match bonus of up to $250. It’s a nifty amount, and the Golden Nugget online sportsbook is generous enough to hand it out at a 1x wagering requirement. So place a bet of $250, and get another $250 to spend, simple as that. There are some T&Cs, of course, but they’re extremely easy to find right on the bonus offer itself.

The bonus amount here could always be better, especially when compared to other sportsbooks like bet365, which offers a deposit match of up to $500. Sure, $250 is not bad, but Golden Nugget is not exactly bringing out the big guns here. No, Golden Nugget’s ace up its sleeve is not its welcome reward, but its Golden Lines bonuses.

Every day, Golden Nugget will provide boosted odds on a selection of bets – an offer called Golden Lines. It’s a hell of an offer and gives players something new to be excited for every single day. There’s a lot to say about this offer, which is in the expert rating below.

Bonus rating

77/100 Golden Lines saves the day
  • Decent welcome bonus
  • Daily boosted odds
  • VIP for casino and deposits only
  • Small selection of bonuses

The welcome bonus is a decent starting point, getting an extra $250 with relatively few strings attached. It’s also nice to see that Golden Nugget online sportsbook bonus codes are not necessary here, and you can instead claim your cash once you’ve met all the conditions.

However, the real meat here has to be the Golden Lines offer. I’m a sucker for daily deals, so this fits right in my wheelhouse. Here Golden Nugget online sportsbook gives players a reason to log in every day, with boosted odds on multiple different sports. Football and basketball are common appearances, which is great, but other less popular sports also pop up and entice players to check them out. Hell, those odds almost made me check out a cricket game before I thankfully came back to my senses.

It’s pretty much impossible to be disappointed with this offer, which makes it so ingenious. New players will always have a popular choice like a match from the NFL boosted over there, so they can comfortably place safe bets. Experienced players, on the other hand, can try their luck with a sport they’re not so familiar with and see how things go. It’s good news all around for newcomers to the Golden Nugget app.

Unfortunately, some bumps with the Golden Nugget bonuses need to be mentioned. The main problem is the low selection of bonuses themselves. Apart from Golden Lines and the welcome bonus (which is only used once), there are daily low vig bets, parlay boosts, and that’s it. I also consider it a bit of a slap in the face that while players can technically sign up for a VIP program, they will get almost no benefits from it with the sportsbook. The only thing a VIP player can do is deposit more money, with the rest of the benefits saved for the casino. It makes the VIP program utterly pointless for players only interested in the sportsbook, which is a real wasted opportunity. In our view, it’s clear that their focus is more on the casinos side, as their online casino bonus is one of the best in the US.

Sports and markets at the Golden Nugget sportsbook

This section of the Golden Nugget sportsbook review is unfortunately where things go sour. Of all the sections to underperform in, Golden Nugget decided that ‘sports’ would be the least important aspect of its sportsbook. Not the cleverest of moves here.

The site lists a middling 17 sports for players to bet on, and it was even cheeky enough to include Golden Lines as one of those sports. Even with us indulging it and pretending that online bet boosts are a sport, that’s still a pitiful amount of sports for a sportsbook. Compared to BetMGM or Borgata, or more of the best online sportsbooks with 20+ sports to choose from, it’s hard not to be disappointed here.

Unfortunately, that’s not even where the bad news ends. Some sports like football feature an impressive 111 markets to bet on, but basketball only features 35 sports betting markets for some reason.

These will only jump up to the 100+ once the match goes live, which is an incredibly cheap move on Golden Nugget’s part. Even something as crucial as Money Line bets are withheld till almost the start of the match.

Finally, it is completely impossible to bet on the Houston Rockets. This one is actually to be expected since the casino owner also owns that team, so sorry, Rockets fans, you guys are just going to have to go somewhere else.

Sports and markets rating

71/100 A disappointing selection of sports to choose from
  • Several betting options for football
  • Daily boosted odds on sports
  • Fewer options on the less popular sports
  • Basketball section is a bit of a mess

Honestly, it’s hard not to be disappointed here. I expected that an institution as old as Golden Nugget would know the value of choice to a player. Sure, all the extremely popular sports are there, but what about the rest? Where’s my cycling, my handball, my NASCAR? Hell, throw in some chess boxing, anything that isn’t just the NFL again and again.

Of course, it should go without saying that other alternatives like esports or politics are also not present. This shouldn’t come as a surprise after everything I just wrote, but it is one more thing that distances Golden Nugget from the rest of its competitors. At this point, I’m just happy that the Golden Nugget online sportsbook app at least has all the betting markets as the desktop site..

As for the whole basketball mess, well, I supposed that Golden Nugget should consider itself lucky that it’s even allowed to have bets for basketball at all, considering the owner owns the Houston Rockets. There was a time when this was the case, so Golden Nugget can count its blessing that NJ changed its laws in September 2019 and allowed bets to be made as long as it wasn’t on their team. Still, the delaying of bets seems inexcusable to me, especially for a sport as big as basketball, and I can only hope that this changes in the future.

Additional market details

Football

No sportsbook is complete without the good old NFL, and Golden Nugget is certainly no exception. There’s a fairly decent amount of markets, coming in at 111, and the NFL is quite a common appearance on the Golden Lines daily boosts list.

Unfortunately, the NCAAF does not have the same luck, coming in with only 22 markets. Just like basketball, the markets jump up once the game goes live, so at least Golden Nugget doesn’t reserve its cheap moves for just basketball.

Hockey

Golden Nugget also has an impressive hockey selection. It naturally features the NHL amongst various other foreign leagues, and this time all of them have a fantastic selection of markets to choose from. The total markets came up to 203, even more than Football! So for the hockey fans out there, the Golden Nugget online sportsbook is one to check out.

Betting features at Golden Nugget

Thankfully things start to look up here for the Golden Nugget sportsbook review. The sportsbook features all the betting features we could ask for, neatly packed in a user-friendly UI that’s easy to manage and understand.

You’ve got your cashouts, with all the markets that can be cashed out having a nice big green logo on them. Not everything can be cashed out, Golden Lines, for instance, does not allow it, but the green logo does help in figuring out what can and can’t be cashed out, and in Golden Nugget’s defense, most markets allow it. There’s also a bet builder that pops up right next to your bet slips, allowing you to build away with ease. The UI is exceedingly user-friendly here, in both desktop and the Golden Nugget sportsbook app.

Live betting is also an option here, and the features are just as impressive. There’s a handy schedule that lets you filter through various upcoming live events, the odds are rapidly updated, and the live data is very in-depth. It’s nice to see a sportsbook that takes the time to show different stats for ‘attacks’ and ‘dangerous attacks’ in soccer games.

It’s a shame that there is no live stream available, and players will instead have to make do with a simple graphic that shows simple information as it happens.

Betting features rating

93/100 A welcome return to form
  • User-friendly tools
  • In-depth data
  • No live stream
  • No other systems than parlay

There’s definitely a lot going for Golden Nugget when it comes to user-friendliness. Everything is very easy to find, use and understand. If I’m not sure if a market lets me cashout, I just search for that little green icon, and voilà, there’s the answer.

The same can be said for pretty much every other feature. It’s all here, and intuitive, so if any player is looking for a bet builder or getting into live betting, Golden Nugget is a solid option.

It is a shame that there is no live stream available for live events. Instead, we have to make do with very simple graphics, and not even all sports have it. Basketball displays a simple scoreboard, so once again, it seems like basketball fans miss out here. I am also disappointed to see another sportsbook that only really offers parlays as a unique feature. This trend is found pretty much all around the US, but I do hope that one day these sportsbooks will take the plunge and offer something new.

Still, this is definitely a big step in the right direction for the Golden Nugget sportsbook review, and I’m happy to say that when it comes to betting features, they pass with flying colors.

Additional features details

Parlays

Ah, good old parlays, everyone’s favorite online gambling boost. For those who don’t know, a parlay lets you link two or more outcomes into one bet. You’ll have a higher risk, but you’ll also get boosted payouts, so for those willing to risk it, it can be pretty lucrative.

Golden Nugget is no exception here, letting you link up to 20 selections for a nice 20% boost. It will even let you link selections from multiple different sports as well, allowing you to choose from football, basketball, hockey, baseball, soccer, and tennis, so it’s a hell of an offer.

Golden Nugget sports betting odds

As is standard with all our reviews, we sampled a bunch of games and converted those odds to some nice average percentages. After seeing what came out, it looks like Golden Nugget odds are actually pretty decent.

The general percentage payout for odds comes in at around 95.16%. Seeing as we consider 97%+ to be the dream and 93%- to be the nightmare, Golden Nugget coming in almost exactly at 95% puts it very comfortably in the middle.

Sure, it can certainly be better, but other sportsbooks like Borgata and SugarHouse all came out lower, so we’ll take it. Payouts for football and basketball both averaged around that mark too as they came up to 95.68% and 95.26%, respectively, so we can surmise that the Golden Nugget sportsbook odds are quite consistent across the sports section.

Odds facts

CategoryDetails

Live payouts are a bit more disappointing, coming in at 93.51%. It’s very common for live payouts to be a bit worse since players have the added bonus of seeing the game play out in front of them, but the difference is a bit more than we would have liked. This is especially significant since, as stated in the sports section before, Golden Nugget likes to only open some markets when the game is live.

*data gathered 9th January 2021

Odds rating

82/100 Solid on the whole
  • Good average payouts
  • Easy to see odds and make in-play bets
  • Low live payouts

As far as sportsbooks go, Golden Nugget is being pretty fair here with its payouts. Sure we all love to see higher payouts, but I think 95% is a comfortable compromise to make. It is nice to see that Golden Nugget does seem to keep things uniform with its different sports. No sport is getting special treatment here, which means fans of all the different sports can safely bet without being cheated on the payouts.

I have to admit that I was hoping to see some better payouts for live betting. I usually accept that live payouts are always going to be a little less, but after seeing Golden Nugget hold out on markets until they go live, I was less willing to make that compromise. It’s simply unfair to push players to live bet and then make off with the extra cash.

Still, things could always be worse, and 93.51% for live payouts is certainly not the worst of numbers. To help sweeten the deal, there are the parlay boosts, so Golden Nugget is still at least offering good deals for the players.

Payment methods at Golden Nugget

Players are pretty sorted when it comes to payments. Golden Nugget offers a whopping 13 different types of payments, pretty much covering anything a player could possibly need. This is up there when it comes to US betting sites, and even Borgata only reached 12 types.

All of the main options are there of course, like VISA, Mastercard, and American Express, and there are also several other options such as Paypal, ACH with VIP Preferred, cash with PayNearMe or at the casino cage, or even a Bank Wire Transfer if you’re so inclined. You can even do cash at the cage in Atlantic City. Good payments = good news, we all want efficient ways to cash out our Golden Nugget bonus.

Their standout option is their Play+ prepaid account. It has the fastest withdrawals and deposits, cashback on account loads, and even some VIP deals attached to it (though we will go over those in the expert section). It’s clear Golden Nugget wants players to use this method, as players even get a free $10 on enrollment.

There are also no deposit or withdrawal fees, though it seems Golden Nugget forgot to put that on the site. Well, that’s not entirely true – they did mention the ‘no deposit fees’. They just decided to only put this information next to the Play+ account section to push players to use it. A bit of a cheeky trick to get players to sign up for Play+, but we’ll forgive them for it since there are no fees at all.

Payments rating

89/100 Multiple options available

  • Great Play+ account
  • The VIP deals

There’s very little negative to actually say here. Golden Nugget excels here at giving players a ton of very good options, with fast deposit and withdrawal times and impressive minimum and maximum amounts for deposits and withdrawals. Even without the VIP deals, I could still make a maximum deposit of $100K by walking into the casino with a briefcase full of cash. I mean, I don’t think I’m crazy enough yet to do it, but I can, and that’s what counts.

The site itself also makes the information exceedingly easy to find. Just click on the big bright tab that says “Banking Info” and you’re taken right to it, with all the info you need. Well, they did leave out the part about there not being any deposit or withdrawal fees, but otherwise, everything else is there, so I’ll allow it.

The only thing that bothers me is the VIP deal. As I stated before in the bonuses section, the sportsbook gets zero benefits from the VIP program. The only benefit that might perhaps affect sportsbook players is that they can at least supposedly deposit and withdraw more. So you’d think that these would actually be decent right? Wrong!

For deposits, the VIP limit is tied with cash for $100K, and even if you’re understandably not comfortable with waltzing in holding stacks of bills as if you’re in a Martin Scorcese film, you can still comfortably send in up to $50K with VIP Preferred. As for withdrawals, the VIP  program lets you withdraw up to $100K, whereas VIP Preferred goes all the way up to $250K. The only benefit to the VIP program is that it ties all these limits to the more comfortable Play+ account, but that’s not enough to justify its existence.

Safety features of Golden Nugget

Safety rating

95/100 A safe environment for all players
  • Award winner
  • Open in 5 states
  • Lacks its own Responsible Gaming platform

It’s nice to see Golden Nugget score so high in this particular section of the review. In fact, in all honesty, there’s very little negative to say about this section at all.

Golden Nugget is clearly very proud to be operating in 5 states, and with good reason. It’s also extremely confident that it will soon be operating in even more states, with a huge “more states coming soon” plastered dead center on its home page. This is a pretty good sign, as it shows their confidence in their safety procedures.

Looking at it all, they’re right to be confident. Every single tool is there and readily available. There’s a reason they won the EGR Operator of the Year award for 4 years in a row, an award which they proudly display at the bottom of their website.

If I really wanted to nitpick, I would have to criticize the lack of their own responsible gaming platform. It’s very small, but it’s enough to drop them just out of a potential perfect score. Still, you should have no reason to feel unsafe when gambling using this sportsbook

Golden Nugget customer support

When entering the Golden Nugget online sportsbook, 3 things stick out. One is the huge “Help Centre” tab that’s right next to banking and promos, making it completely unmissable. The second is the bright yellow “My Support” button on the right vertical toolbar. Finally, there is the even brighter red, sticky live chat button. Clearly, Golden Nugget is one of those online sportsbooks that wants to make sure that you get your help.

Taking these one at a time, the Help Centre tab opens up to an extensive FAQ section about pretty much every topic possible. There is also a support button players can click that will direct them to the contact details of the Golden Nugget NJ sportsbook. The same will happen if players decide to click on the bright yellow “My Support” button instead, so players can easily access these contact details no matter where they are.

As for the live chat itself, it’s open 24/7 which is always a bonus. We tested it out and found the answers to be quick and efficient, no matter the hour of the day. Entering the live chat was generally very quick, though there would be a very small queue if it was extremely late or early morning hours.

Support rating

92/100 A nearly flawless community service
  • Extensive FAQ section
  • 24/7 live chat even available for non-registered users
  • Easy to find and access contact page
  • Slight queue at very late hours

Considering just how prominent all of the help options are on the sportsbook, I get the feeling that Golden Nugget would be offended if I didn’t ask them for help. They have pretty much every option imaginable, allowing you to contact them in any way you want.

The FAQ section is massive, truly massive. I don’t know what kind of frequently asked questions Golden Nugget receives, but apparently, it’s every question under the sun. If you have any queries at all, I’d highly recommend checking the FAQ first as it’s likely they’ve already thought of your question and posted a small novella answering it in the FAQ of the Golden Nugget sportsbook site.

As for my experience with live chat, it honestly went really well. It was nice to see that I could jump in without having to register. I have to admit that on my first attempt with it, the answers were a little bit cut and dry, however, all subsequent attempts were met with much friendlier and far more helpful answers.

I also have to make a special mention to an attempt in the early hours of the morning where my internet died mid-conversation, and by the time I got back into my Golden Nugget sportsbook account, not only had the agent patiently waited for me but she also compiled a list of answers for me for the question I had. Now that’s what I call customer service — truly a top sports betting site.

Golden Nugget’s platform

Here are all of the important details that you need to know regarding the platform, both on the Golden Nugget website and the app::

  • Registration involves 20 fields and 23 different clicks, including optional stuff.
  • The welcome offer requires you to make a bet first.
  • The website is very easy to navigate and understand.
  • There is an extremely good search bar and filtering options to go along with everything else.
  • The Golden Nugget online sportsbook app is a more streamlined counterpart to its desktop alternative, which is impressive as the desktop version is already excellent.

There’s also a nice bar right at the top that scrolls through all of the bonuses Golden Nugget has, a great tool since this sportsbook features changing daily bonuses. Often the first thing you’ll see is a large graphic for the new Golden Lines odds, and clicking on it will take you right where you need to go to bet on them.

Platform rating

91/100 A great platform on desktop and on mobile
  • Quick registration
  • Great mobile app
  • It’s a little bit ugly

Golden Nugget ends its review on a bang with its platform. It’s honestly very comfortable and easy to navigate, something I’ve been harping on for pretty much the entire time, so really this score should come as no surprise.

Registration is extremely quick, with a small window that opens up and lets you fill in all the necessary information. It does seem like a lot of fields and clicks at first, but that’s mostly its insistence on separating the address into several smaller fields, and some of it is even optional. Then it’s just a matter of depositing some money and boom, you’re ready to go.

The mobile app is pretty great as well, feeling even more streamlined than its desktop counterpart, and that’s saying something. The desktop version does rely just a bit too much on toolbars, so it’s nice to see the mobile app convert these to drop-down menus that can be opened and closed as I please. As far as betting apps go, it’s not bad at all!

There is a bit of a waiting time for the welcome bonus while everything gets verified, but it wasn’t all that bad. Honestly, my only real complaint with the platform is that it’s all just a little bit ugly. Now yes I get it, this is a completely subjective point, but I just don’t like the bright red and yellow color palette that is everywhere on this site. There’s a reason bet365 famously sticks to black and dark green, it’s nice and sleek and most importantly doesn’t make my eyes hurt just looking at it. But hey, that’s just me, and it doesn’t take away from how great the sportsbook platform is overall.

Golden Nugget verticals

Apart from the sportsbook, Golden Nugget also features a casino and a live dealer. These are both easily found, as they have their own tabs right next to the ‘promos’ tab. We already have our review of the casino which can be found here so I won’t say too much, but spoiler alert, the casino scored extremely well so no need to be shy about giving it a try
