Avalon slot review

Microgaming released the first Avalon slot in 2006, making it more than retro. Despite its age, there are several details that make this slot a keen competitor with some of the more modern slots on the market today.

A slot RTP of 96.01%, free spins, a multiplier, and a maximum win of $40,000 are some of the highlights of the Avalon slot. To learn more, keep reading my Avalon slot review below.

Avalon slot review summary

Players who are fond of classic slot games will enjoy Avalon based on its looks alone. Avalon has simple but smooth animations, a soothing background track, and colorful 2D symbols. Although the slot’s been around for two decades, the graphics are much more detailed than you’d expect.

As for the bonus features, on paper, everything sounds great. The Wilds and scatters appear pretty often. The free spins feature is always great to have, but unfortunately doesn’t trigger that frequently in this game, meaning you also don’t get to see the multiplier feature much either.

From a technical standpoint, Avalon’s slot RTP sits comfortably at 96.01% with medium volatility. There are 20 paylines and a win potential of $40,000 when playing at maximum bet.

Pros

  • Multiplier during free spins

  • 96.01% RTP

  • Maximum win of $40,000

Cons

  • High minimum bet of $0.20

  • Free spins don’t trigger often

  • No progressive jackpot

Avalon comprehensive review

In my Avalon slot review, you’ll find all the details on the slot’s RTP and volatility, its bonus features, and its symbols and their payouts. Plus, I’ll also explain how the slot works and how to play it.

RTP and volatility

The Avalon slot RTP is 96.01%, which is in line with the industry average. It has medium volatility and 20 paylines.

The Avalon slot has friendly technical features. 96% is good for a slot’s RTP, and the medium volatility in this game feels more like low-medium volatility. I found that wins landed quite frequently, although they were typically pretty small.

The slot’s frequent hit rate is partly due to the agreeable volatility, but there are also 20 paylines. Fewer paylines would mean a reduced hit rate, like on Fishin’ Frenzy which has just 10 paylines.

Bonus features

Avalon has four bonus features. These are the Wild symbol, the scatter symbol, free spins, and a multiplier. The Wild symbol is the picture of a castle surrounded by clouds, with the word Wild at the bottom. This symbol can substitute for all other symbols, except for the scatter.

The scatter symbol is the picture of the long-haired character, holding a sword. The scatter symbol has two roles. Firstly, the symbol can pay anywhere on the reels with just two symbols. It’s also the trigger for the free spins feature.

Free spins are triggered when at least three scatters land on the reels. You’ll be given 12 free spins, and a random multiplier value is awarded for every winning free spin. The maximum multiplier is 7x the bet.

The chest symbol also doubles as an additional Wild symbol during the free spins round. Free spins can be re-triggered if more scatter symbols land on the reels during the free spins round.

Avalon’s bonus features are very classic. Wilds, scatters, and free spins, with the addition of a multiplier. The Wilds and scatters appear pretty often, especially the scatters.

Unfortunately, I never had more than two scatters on the reels at the same time. In over 400 spins, I never triggered a free spins round, so it’s not a feature that triggers often. The multiplier is a great additional feature, but it only works if you manage to trigger a free spins round.

For the time when this game was produced, and the style of it, the bonus features are great. I’d just like to see them more often.

Symbols and paytable

The Avalon has 12 paying symbols, including the Wild and the scatter.

10, J, Q, K, and A are the lowest-paying symbols. The 10 and J award the same payouts, awarding $0.25 for three symbols and $2.50 for five on a bet of $1. The Q, K, and A pay out a little better. On a bet of $1, five Q symbols award a payout of $3.75, five K symbols award a payout of $5, and five As award a payout of $7.50.

The next symbols are the chalice, the green jewel, the Avalon coat of arms, the crown, and the chest. These are the high-paying symbols. The chalice and the green jewel both award a payout of $0.50 for three of a kind when the bet is set to $1, and four symbols award a payout of $2.50.

For five of a kind, the chalice awards a payout of $20, and the green jewel will pay out $25. The Avalon coat of arms has much higher payouts, awarding $3.75 for four symbols on a bet of $1, and $30 for five.

The crown is one of the symbols that allows a win with just two symbols. The payout is $0.25 for two symbols on a bet of $1, but for five symbols, you’ll get $40. The chest, Wild, and scatter symbols can also award wins for just two symbols.

You’ll get $50 for five symbols when your bet is set to $1 with the chest symbol, but the Wild symbol awards a payout of $150 for five. The highest-paying symbol in the game is the scatter symbol. Five scatters pay out $200 on a bet of $1. On the maximum bet, five scatters will award a payout of $40,000.

The Avalon slot has great payouts overall. For starters, the payouts increase steadily from the start. Plus, I liked that there are as many as four symbols that allow wins with just two of a kind. In most games, it’s typically just one symbol that can land wins on only two symbols.

The general payouts are pretty rewarding. NetEnt’s Twin Spin, for instance, has much lower average payouts in comparison. On a bet of $1, the lowest paying symbols pay out $1 for five symbols, but in Avalon, it’s a payout of $2.50. For the highest-paying symbol in the game, the maximum payout is $5,000, which is great but pales in comparison with Avalon’s $40,000.

How to play the Avalon slot

To start the game, press the spin button on the right-hand side of the grid. Below it, there’s the turbo button and the bet button. Above it, there’s the autoplay button and the menu.

Press the bet button to change your bet. The menu shows a slider, which you can use to adjust your bet slowly and accurately. Alternatively, there are six quick bet options: $0.20, $2.40, $9, $28, $80, and $180. There’s also a button to play at max bet, which sets the bet to $200.

The autoplay button also has a slider, which gives the same options as the buttons below it. You can have 10, 25, 50, or 100 autospins. There aren’t any additional autoplay settings.

Expert verdict

The Avalon slot is a great option for any kind of player. For high-rollers, you’ll be pleased with the wide betting range and the potential for big wins. Although the volatility is pretty player-friendly, as is the RTP, always calculate your bets carefully to avoid getting caught out and losing more than you can afford.

For greener players, the game is accessible and straightforward to play. The low RTP and medium volatility make it ideal for an inexperienced player, and the bonus features are simple to get to grips with.

The win potential of $40,000 is definitely attractive, but the average payouts on smaller bets aren’t bad either. For players who need frequent bonus features, you might feel a bit stuck since most of the game produces just Wilds and paying scatters.
