Expert verdict

Horseplay casino tries to do something new and innovative, but it doesn’t quite stick the landing.

There’s plenty to like about the casino. It has a solid welcome bonus, and the games available are fun to play. Its bespoke software is fast and glitch-free, as is its iOS mobile app.

Most things come with a caveat though. Common promotions are missing, such as refer-a-friend and a VIP program. The games library is tiny, and several common payment methods are absent too. To top it all off, the one complete explanation of how it all works is buried in the site’s terms, with the barebones “How it works” page barely covering the tip of the iceberg.

Overall, Horseplay certainly isn’t a bad gaming platform, but it leaves a lot to be desired, and you might be better off with a more standard sweepstakes casino.

State differences

Horseplay is available in 18 US states, with the games and features being the same in every available state. Unfortunately, residents of California, Colorado, Montana, New York, Oregon, and Wyoming do not benefit from a welcome bonus.

How does Horseplay casino work?

The basics of playing at Horseplay casino:

  1. You deposit cash at Horseplay
  2. Horseplay uses that cash to bet on horse races
  3. Once the races are finished, your winnings are given back to you as credits
  4. You can then use the credits to play casino games and reveal your winnings from the horse races.

The critical thing to understand is that you are not winning money through the casino’s games. The games are simply a fun way of revealing your winnings from the horse races. This means that the values you will get from the casino games are already set, depending on what you won on the horse race bets.

It’s also important to understand that it is Horseplay betting on the horse races, not you. You are giving them your cash, which they use to place a bet for you. Once the race is finished, Horseplay then gives any winnings back to you.

Cash can be won through the Freeplay credits, which you can get through casino bonuses. You can also demo all the games and play them for free, so you don’t need to wait for horse races to finish before trying out any games.

Horseplay betting bonuses

Newcomers to Horseplay are greeted with a deposit match bonus that works on two levels. Players who make a first deposit and credit package purchase of up to $20 will qualify for a 100% credit match in Freeplay credits. Alternatively, players can make a first deposit and credit package purchase of $40 or higher, and get a 200% credit match in Freeplay credits up to $500.

Freeplay credits, unlike normal cash credits, can be used to win withdrawable funds through the casino’s games. However, the player will need to make a first deposit and “play” $100 to make winnings from Freeplay credits withdrawable.

Freeplay credits are the only way to win cash through the randomness of the casino’s games, with normal credits instead giving a set amount of winnings depending on the results of the horse race bets.

Existing players benefit from a weekly and weekend promo. From Monday through Thursday, players can win Freeplay credits depending on how much they deposited, purchased, and played. This works on three levels, like so:

  1. Deposit, purchase, and play between $50–$100 to qualify for 5% back in Freeplay credits on total credits purchased.
  2. Deposit, purchase, and play between $101–$300 to qualify for 10% back in Freeplay credits on total credits purchased.
  3. Deposit, purchase, and play $300 or more to qualify for 15% back in Freeplay credits on total credits purchased, to a maximum of $50 Freeplay credits.

The weekend promo runs every Saturday and Sunday and requires players to deposit, purchase, and play up to $20. If players do so, they are eligible to get 10% back on any total net loss over the weekend in Freeplay credits, up to a maximum of $100.

Finally, three tournaments let you win Freeplay credits by climbing up the leaderboards. Players get one point for every cent ($0.01) of cash winnings revealed. These tournaments are:

  • A 24-hour tournament with $1,000 in Freeplay prizes up for grabs
  • A Friday–Sunday weekend tournament with $2,000 in Freeplay prizes up for grabs
  • A monthly tournament with $10,000 in Freeplay prizes up for grabs

Unfortunately, there is no information on how the total Freeplay credits are split between the winners.

Bonus rating

76/100 Lacking common bonus types
  • Loads of tournaments
  • No promo code required
  • No VIP or refer-a-friend program
  • Unclear terms

Horseplay casino’s bonus offering is quite decent, but it has a long way to go before it can be considered among the best casino bonus offerings.

For starters, some very common bonus types like refer-a-friend, free spins, social media competitions, or even a VIP program are all missing. These are all available at WOW Vegas if you’re looking for a casino with great bonuses.

There are the weekend, weekly, and tournament promos, but be warned that they come with unclear terms. Remember, you cannot simply play the required amount of credits — you’ll also need to deposit and purchase the required amount within the time limit, or the promo is lost.

Still, there are enough bonuses to make this a decent offering, and the welcome bundle is large, so I won’t rag on them too much. I’d just like to see some more common bonus types make an appearance as well.

81 casino games at Horseplay

There are 81 casino games at Horseplay casino. These include 73 slots and eight table games, which include bingo and video poker. There are no live games or jackpots at Horseplay.

With the exception of Freeplay credits from Horseplay’s bonuses, players don’t win cash through the randomness of the casino’s games. The credits used would have the winnings from the horse races on them, and the casino games are simply a fun way of revealing these winnings to the player.

There are also demos available for registered players, so you can try out the games before using your credits on them.

Games rating

70/100 Small and limited games library
  • Bingo available
  • Demos available
  • Small library
  • Limited variety

It’s hard to compare Horseplay’s library because quite frankly, there isn’t anything like them. These aren’t really games in the sense that we know them — they’re just a fun way to reveal your winnings from the horse races.

On the one hand, you could argue that since there’s nothing like it, then 81 is a huge games library because it’s being compared to zero. To me, that feels disingenuous but I can understand that perspective.

In the end, I can only really discuss my own experience with Horseplay, and based on that 81 games feels small. Not only that, but the lack of variety is noticeable, especially with jackpots and live games missing.

Still, this one is perhaps more subjective than usual, and I get that if all you’re doing is revealing winnings then even just a few games are enough. Let us know what you think down below in the user reviews.

Horseplay’s bespoke software

Horseplay has one software provider, which is its own bespoke software powered by its parent company, Game Play Network Inc. This is necessary due to the unique nature of the casino’s games and the way it all works.

Software rating

80/100 One software provider to rule them all
  • Strong and reliable software
  • No download required
  • No other options
  • No live software

Due to the unique nature of how Horseplay’s site works, it needs to use its bespoke software to make sure the games read the credits properly and display the winnings from the horse races. It’s a good thing then that the software is quite good.

The games run smoothly, with no lag or glitches. There’s also no download required for any of the games, so you can play them instantly.

I’m still going to mark off a few points due to the lack of variety. This could be solved by getting more software providers, but if Game Play Network wants to stick to their software then they’ll need to mix up the offering a little bit.

Five Horseplay purchase methods

There are five transaction methods at Horseplay casino. Players can use bank transfer, and four different cards: VISA, Mastercard, Discover, and Diners Club.

From these five methods, only one is available for withdrawals: bank transfer.

Payments rating

76/100 Subpar withdrawal options
  • Plenty of cards available
  • Only one withdrawal option
  • Long withdrawal times

I’ve cut Horseplay some slack in the previous sections since Horseplay’s games and software are completely unique. Payment methods however are standard in every casino, and Horseplay certainly falls behind its competitors in this regard.

For starters, five payment methods is already on the lower end for any casino. Chumba boasts nine payment methods, which include a variety of cards, bank transfers, e-wallets, and gift cards.

One withdrawal option is also, to be blunt, a bit silly. A lot of people use cards and e-wallets to not have to disclose their bank account information to other sites; however, players are forced to do so here if they want to see their winnings. Bank transfers are also much slower to be processed than e-wallets, as evidenced by the five-day withdrawal time.

Is Horseplay casino safe?

Horseplay uses 256-bit SSL encryption and two-factor authentication (TFA) to keep your private information safe. Its unique method of gambling doesn’t require a license, leading it to be available in 18 US states.

Horseplay uses a responsible gaming (RG) program called “bSafe” to provide tools and resources to players. These include links and hotlines to resources, as well as tools for cooling-off periods, self-exclusion, and setting a deposit limit.

Safety rating

76/100 Good, but not good enough
  • bSafe program
  • SSL encryption
  • Limited RG tools
  • Only available in 18 states

The basic safety of Horseplay certainly isn’t bad. The SSL and TFA all but guarantee that your private information won’t get stolen by any nasty hackers.

What I’m more worried about is the regulation of it all. Real-money casinos like Caesars tend to be available in few, regulated states, while sweeps casinos are far more widely available, with Golden Hearts being available in 48 states for example.

Horseplay falls somewhere in the middle, being available in only 18 states. Most states don’t seem to know how to handle the novelty of Horseplay and have therefore decided to deny it permission altogether. As for the other 18 states, it’s unclear how or if they’re regulating Horseplay in some way.

New things can be exciting, but they’re also risky. Horseplay exists in this grey area between sports and casino betting, so be warned that you might not be as protected as you would be if you gambled at a more traditional casino.

Horseplay’s 24/7 customer support

Support rating

85/100 Limited options backed by a great team
  • 24/7 support
  • Detailed FAQ
  • No live chat
  • No phone support

I liked the support options available to me at Horseplay casino. It is lacking quantity, but it makes up for it in quality.

The FAQ section is large and detailed, and neatly filtered into different sections. Too many sites, such as Luckybird.io, have far too small an FAQ with critical information missing, and all it does is cause confusion and frustration. Thankfully Horseplay doesn’t have this problem.

The email support is also great, with the team giving detailed answers. Replies could take a while to come in though, so be prepared to wait a bit.

I certainly would have liked live chat and phone support to be available, but what is here is great.

Usability at Horseplay

The Horseplay site is fast and easy to use, with quick loading times and a lag-free experience overall. The site uses a green-on-white color scheme with large buttons that are easy to see.

Horseplay homepage on two mobile devices

Horseplay has a mobile app for iOS, but nothing on the Google Play store. The site is also accessible through your mobile web browser. All the features on the desktop version are available on the mobile platform.

The site uses a few basic filters and lacks a search function for its games. On some pages, including the Horseplay homepage, the links to the site’s social media pages are broken, as they attempt to link you to the old bSpot social media pages.

Usability rating

71/100 Plenty of room for improvement
  • Great iOS app
  • Fast loading times
  • No search function
  • Broken socials links
  • No Android app

Horseplay’s platform is not bad, but it’s got a long way to go. This includes some very silly problems that need to be fixed ASAP.

For example, why are some social media buttons trying to link to the old bSpot casino pages? The rebrand to Horseplay happened months ago, so these should have been swapped out by now.

I also lack patience for any site that doesn’t have a search function. I know that with just 81 games you can work without it, but it’s a simple enough feature that all sites should have it by now.

Still, the platform itself is good and very usable. It loads fast and is easy to navigate, so I don’t want to tear into it too much. All they need to do is fix the small but impactful mistakes and have an app that’s available in the Google Play store to improve the score here massively.
