Avalon II slot review summary

Avalon II’s visuals are an upgrade from the original slot, working with a combination of 2D and 3D symbols, with various backgrounds, scenes, and more animations. There’s also an atmospheric background track and game sounds, which set the tone for this adventurous slot game.

The slot is packed with bonus features, 10 to be exact. Three of these are available in the base game and come in the form of a Wild and multipliers. The rest are accessed by triggering three or more scatter symbols, opening up the map to reach the Holy Grail. These features include mini games, cash prizes, more multipliers, and free spins.

Besides its impressive selection of bonus features, Avalon II works with an RTP of 97% and medium volatility. The slot has 243 ways to win, and a maximum win potential of 16,200x your bet.

My Avalon II slot review breaks down the sequel game to Microgaming’s original Avalon slot. I’ll cover Avalon II’s RTP and volatility, its bonus features, the slot’s symbols, and their payouts. I also cover how to get started when it comes to playing the slot.

Expert Box

Avalon II’s slot RTP sits a little above the industry average, meaning the house edge will be lower. This is a good thing, especially for players who don’t look for high-risk games or who are a little less experienced when it comes to slot games.

The slot also has medium volatility, which should make it a fairly balanced game. Plus, 243 ways to win allow for a decent hit rate. Like all games of chance, though, the outcomes are always randomized, so you can’t predict your next win.

Bonus features

Microgaming stepped it up with Avalon II, introducing 10 different bonus features.

Top featuresWilds

Lady of the Lake Wild

This is the Wild symbol. It can substitute for all paying symbols, and if it lands on reel 3, it can expand to fill the reel.

Merlin Bonus feature

Merlin can pop up on the reels at any time, awarding multipliers or cash prizes.

Ancient Magician feature

When you lose a spin, this feature can award multipliers, ranging from a minimum of 4x to a maximum of 20x. If you had a successful spin, the Ancient Magician can award a multiplier of 2x-4x.

Grail Quest Feature

The Grail Quest feature is triggered when you land three or more scatters on the reels. This offers multiple bonus games. A map appears on screen showing different regions and each one is a feature.

The features are unlocked each time you trigger the Holy Grails bonus symbol. Below are the different bonus features you can unlock:

Lake of Legend

In this feature, you’ll be given 10 dice rolls with the chance to reforge Arthur’s famous sword, the Excalibur. The sword is broken into six pieces, and each piece of Excalibur has a number that corresponds to a number on the dice.

You need to roll each corresponding number to put the sword back together. After completing all six parts of Excalibur, you’ll get a 15x multiplier, plus a 6x multiplier for the remaining rolls.

Misty Vale

The Misty Vale feature awards 15 free spins. You’ll need to choose a high-paying symbol that becomes your extra Wild with a 2x multiplier.

Choose Your Path

A fork in the map allows players to choose between three games: Whispering Woods, Forest Falls, and Dusky Moors. In Whispering Woods, you’ll need to choose one of five shields shown on screen.

Each shield awards a different prize, ranging from 10x to 160x your current bet. Forest Falls offers 20 free spins and trailing Wilds, and Dusky Moors is a pick-and-match bonus game.

You’ll be shown several helmet symbols and need to find the matching pair. This feature can also award multipliers up to 20x.

Morgan’s Keep

This will award 20 free spins and rolling reels. Each rolling reel will increase the multiplier by one, up to a maximum of 6x.

Hall of Shadows

In this mini game, you’ll need to fight the Black Knight to win prizes, like a cash bonus or a multiplier.

Isle of Avalon

This is a spin-the-wheel bonus game, made up of four concentric rings. The rings turn slowly, revealing the numbers that will come together to form your final multiplier.

The bonus starts with just three rings turning. If you land a zero on the third ring, this will unlock the fourth ring.

Where bonus features are concerned, Avalon II is putting in the work. I loved that all these features are so strongly connected to the theme and the lore behind this slot, particularly the Holy Grail bonuses. Choosing these bonus features from the map makes the player feel like they’re on the quest for the Holy Grail.

There is the downside that the majority of the bonus features are only available once triggered with the scatters, meaning it will take you a while to get through all of them. Those that are available in the base game are good, though, even if there’s a strong focus on multipliers.

Another game with ample bonus features is Reactoonz 2. The difference is that its multiple bonus features are all available in the base game and they tend to build on each other, meaning it won’t be so long before you trigger the next feature.

Symbols and paytable

The Avalon II slot has 13 paying symbols, including the Grail Bonus symbol. The six low-paying symbols are traditional card symbols: 9, 10, J, Q, K, and A. On a bet of $0.30, the 9 and 10 will award a payout of $0.04. For five of a kind, it’s $0.60.

The J and Q pay out a little higher, awarding $0.80 for five, and the K and A pay out higher again, giving you $1 for five on a bet of $0.30.

The next five symbols are character symbols: Black Knight, Morgan, Guinevere, Merlin, and King Arthur, and lastly, the Avalon II logo. The Black Knight is the middle-of-the-road symbol, paying out $0.10 for three symbols on a bet of $0.30 and $2 for five.

Merlin, King Arthur, and the Avalon II logo are the only symbols that can have wins with just two symbols. With King Arthur, it’s $0.02 for two symbols and $10 for five of a kind. The Avalon II logo pays out $20 for five of a kind.

The highest-paying symbol in the game is the Grail Bonus symbol. This awards a payout of $30 for five symbols on a bet level of $0.30.

The maximum payout in Avalon II is 16,200x your bet.

Avalon II’s payouts are okay, but when you line them up with the original Avalon’s payouts, they don’t look so good.

To compare the two, I set Avalon to its lowest bet of $0.20 and Avalon II to its lowest bet of $0.30. For example, the A symbol in Avalon awards a payout of $1.50 for five, while in Avalon II, the same symbol awards $1 for five.

If we look at the highest-paying symbols in the games, which in both cases is the scatter/bonus symbol, in Avalon you’ll get $40 for five, while in Avalon II, the payout is $30. So across the board, for a bet worth $0.10 less, you’re getting more. Avalon II has plenty more engaging bonus features, which can add up to lucrative wins, but it’s still worth noting that the average payouts aren’t improved from the original slot.

Expert verdict

For players who love a fantasy adventure theme, Avalon II is a great option for a slot game. Specifically for players who enjoy bonus features in a low-stakes game. For high-rollers, the average payouts and the maximum bet of $30 aren’t going to give you the results you might hope for.

The RTP of 97% and medium volatility however make this a pretty player-friendly slot, and that bet range is great for players who want to work with a smaller budget.

The bonus features are definitely the major highlight in this slot, with 10 to look forward to. Plus, there’s the anticipation of unlocking a new feature each time you trigger three bonus symbols. You’ll likely need to be patient to unlock them all, though, since it will probably take a while.
