Expert verdict
On first look, Playson’s Mammoth Peak slot appears to have a lot to offer and great payouts. However, while this is a great slot, when I dug into it not everything was as picture-perfect as it seemed.
From an audiovisual perspective, Mammoth Peak looks great. It’s full of color and texture, with a lot of details, such as the very active volcano in the background. The slot also has well-chosen game sounds that bring scene to life, along with a very catchy background track.
The average payouts on Mammoth Peak are a little smaller than you’d expect. However, I did find the slot paid out more frequently than I thought it would, especially with a below-average RTP. I had some pretty big wins, which I wasn’t expecting with an RTP of 95.10%, but it’s the slot’s medium-high volatility that balanced things out.
What the slot does well is its bonus features. The Hold and Win Bonus game is triggered frequently and in my experience, allowed for some big wins. The slot also has four jackpots to win, which can be won more than once during the bonus game. Mammoth Peak’s free spins is a bit limited with eight free spins and doesn’t trigger so often, but it does come with a Double Wild, which definitely works in your favor.

There are eight paying symbols, plus the Wild which also pays when it’s not substituting for another paying symbol. The four lowest-paying symbols are card symbols: J, Q, K, and A. These four have the same payout values. At the lowest bet of $0.20, three symbols pay out $0.05, while five pay $0.50.
The four higher-paying symbols are a dodo bird, a warthog, a saber-toothed tiger, and a rhino. The rhino is the highest-paying symbol and pays out $0.10 for three symbols and $4 for five. The Wild, represented by a woolly mammoth, pays out the same as the rhino.

The average payouts could be a little better. The rhino, as the highest-paying symbol, only pays out a maximum of $4 when set to the lowest bet. While that’s 8x higher than the lower-paying symbols, it’s not the highest amount I’ve come across.
Dead or Alive 1, when set to the closest similar bet value of $0.18 pays out better. While its lowest-paying symbols have the same payout values of $0.50 for five symbols, its highest-paying symbol pays out $20 for five.
The Mammoth Peak RTP is also below average, which is why I expected the slot to pay out less frequently than it did. The medium-high volatility would have balanced it out, allowing for more frequent but smaller wins. The large Wild symbol definitely helps maximize wins across multiple paylines too, which I did have more than once.

The bets increase in small increments at first: 0.20, 0.40, 0.60, 0.80, 1.00, 1.20, 1.60, 1.40. After that, they increase in much larger increments before hitting 50.

The bet range on Mammoth Peak was a bit disappointing. $0.20 is fine to start with, and most slots I’ve come across have a similar starting point. There are plenty out there with a lower minimum bet, such as Dead or Alive 1 which starts at $0.09. $50, however, as a max bet is not that great.
It works well for players who are working with a restricted budget while still allowing for some pretty big wins, but when looking at other slots it does fall short. Finn and the Swirly Spin, for example, has a max bet of $500.
What’s good about Mammoth Peak’s bet range is the increments available, as there are a couple more than I’ve usually found in a slot with such a narrow bet range. The additions of $1.20, $1.40, and $1.60 stretch the bet range a little further and allow a little more control over your betting, instead of jumping from $1 to $2 and so on.
As for the max win, I was expecting more. It’s a decent max win but with the bonus features that this slot has, I felt there was the potential for a much higher max win.
Bonus features on Mammoth Peak
One of Mammoth Peak’s symbols is the woolly mammoth Wild. This symbol takes the space of two symbols, maximzing your chances of landing a win. During the free spins round, the Wild takes on a x2 multiplier, doubling any wins it creates.
The free spins round is triggered by landing three of the free spins symbol. You’ll recognize it as it’s the word free spins in yellow text with a red outline. This symbol can only land on reels 2, 3, and 4. Once triggered, eight free spins are awarded, though eight more free spins can be won during the free spins round.

The Hold and Win bonus game is triggered by landing six or more bonus symbols on the base game reels. During the bonus game, only bonus symbols will land on the reels, not the paying symbols.
The bonus symbol is an asteroid covered in flames, with the paying value on it. This could be as low as x1 the bet, or as much as x10. Some bonus symbols have the words Mini, Minor, Major, and Grand on them, which correlate to the four jackpots in the game.
The aim of the bonus game is to form a winning line on the bottom row. All the bonus symbols that land on the reels slide down to the bottom row to hopefully create a win. Once the line is full, the total win is calculated. If a bonus symbol with a jackpot forms part of the winning row, that jackpot value is added to the total win. There’s also a bonus symbol with no value on it, which can increase the chances of forming a winning line, even if it doesn’t pay out.
After the winning line has been paid out, those symbols disappear to make way for a new potential line. Three spins are granted at the beginning of the bonus game, but each new bonus symbol that lands on the reels resets the number of re-spins to three. The bonus game continues until all the re-spins have been used up.
During the base game, there’s also the Volcano Feature. This is a volcano that sits in the background of the game window. Whenever bonus symbols land on the grid, they send fire into the volcano, disturbing it. The more frequently this happens, the more lava flows over the edge. If this happens often enough, the volcano can trigger a bonus game. Occasionally, suppose only five bonus symbols land on the grid at once time. In that case, the volcano can grant an additional bonus game by turning some of the paying symbols into bonus symbols.

The Hold and Win bonus game is the highlight of this game. First, it triggers a lot. There was one game where it was triggered six times. Some of those allowed for some big wins, like $5,100 and $3,050 with my bet set to $50.
The jackpots are also available to be won during this bonus game. As they’re written on the bonus symbols, all it takes is for one to land in the bottom row and it’s added to your win. I won the Mini jackpot twice in one bonus game, which led to one of my big ones, and in another round I won the Minor jackpot. However, during other bonus rounds, my wins were as small as $34.
The free spins, however, almost never triggered for me. In total, I think I played the free spins round twice. I was also disappointed by how few free spins were awarded. Eight is a small number, even if you can win another eight during the free spins round. It’s not the smallest I’ve seen, as Phoenix Fire Power Reels only has seven. NetEnt’s Dead or Alive 1 has 12 free spins, and it’s a much older slot.
The Double Wild during the free spins is a great addition, though, as it opens up the game for bigger wins. Wilds land on the reels, both in free spins and in the base game, quite often. I liked that the Wilds are big enough to take up two squares as it did create bigger wins for me. There was one win of $2,425, thanks to the six Wilds I landed while having my bet set to maximum.
This doesn’t mean it happens all the time, as nothing is for certain in games of chance. But features like big Wilds, Double Wilds, and Hold and Win, can create opportunities for bigger wins than the average base game payouts.
Mammoth Peak audiovisuals
The audiovisuals on Mammoth Peak are high-quality and carefully chosen to bring the slot to life. From a visual perspective, the slot is vibrant, with colors and textures that make the slot pop. The animal symbols have a lot of detail, which creates a more textured and solid feel.
The game window’s background is a mountain range with snowy peaks and some melted snow on the ground. The volcano is also continuously animated. There’s always smoke coming out of the top and varying levels of lava.

There are small animations throughout the Mammoth Peak slot, such as the free spins symbol and any winning symbols. The letter symbols also have a minor glow when they form part of a winning combination. There’s more animation on the bonus symbols as they’re constantly on fire and flames shoot out from them towards the volcano.
In terms of audio, the slot’s sound effects and background music work to create an immersive slot. The ongoing background track is a mixture of wind instruments and drums. There are also unique game sounds, such as the volcano erupting, or mammoth trumpet sound that occurs when the reels spin faster to reveal the final free spins symbol or bonus symbol.

I really like the animal symbols chosen for this slot. They’re funny and true to the theme, and the woolly mammoth Wild seems pretty fierce. The audiovisuals are a strong element of this slot. It’s the type of visuals and audio pairing that creates an engaging game. The color palette chosen is great and works really well with what the slot is trying to do. There’s texture and everything just pops. Paired with the music, it feels like something straight out of the ‘Ice Age’ movies.
I really liked the woolly mammoth trumpet sound when the game needed to build hype before revealing a special symbol, it just really works with the theme and fits the vibe of this slot perfectly. The other game sounds hit the spot too, and the background music was fun and playful. It does get repetitive after a long gaming session, but you can mute that.
Other small symbols, like the flames that appear around the boxes of winning symbols and other small animations, like the woolly mammoth breathing, are a nice touch too.

Mammoth Peak comes with infinite autoplay. All you need to do is press the button once and press it again once you’re done spinning, though, there aren’t any additional settings, such as a win or loss limit. The spin button, however, has a few different functions. You can hit spin for a regular spin, and you can also press it again to skip to the end of the spin. If you press and hold, you’ll get a quick spin. If you don’t press again, you enter autoplay mode on quick spin. Underneath it, there’s turbo spin, which is switched on and off as you like.
Any additional information you need is in the Game Info, accessed by pressing the ‘I’ button. Unfortunately, the slot’s RTP and volatility are not included, so I had to find these elsewhere.
On mobile, the game functions smoothly when in portrait mode, as everything is clear and easy to read. In landscape mode, the grid is small, as are the buttons.

On first glance, the slot is pretty easy to navigate since all the buttons you need are big and clear. It’s a pretty simply structured slot, so I found my way around easily. I was disappointed that I didn’t find the RTP and volatility.
Not all game providers include the slot’s volatility, but the RTP is typically always included and not finding it felt misleading. I found it online, but this needs to be upfront information. If it’s not in the Game Info section, it needs to be on Playson’s website, and neither of them had it.
Aside from this, the rest of the game layout is pretty good. The infinity autoplay could be an interesting feature, however, it’s totally missing any sort of essential safety net that helps players control how long they play. The game can essentially autospin forever until you run out of budget, which could create some dangerous situations. At the very least, this feature could have a loss limit to stop the autospins after a determined point.
As for the mobile experience, the slot works wonderfully in portrait mode. The grid takes up as much space as possible, making everything nice and big. The buttons are within reach and a decent size too. In landscape mode, the grid was a little small for me. Still possible to play, but definitely not as comfortable as in portrait mode.
