Eye of Horus slot review

Eye of Horus is an Egyptian-themed online slot released by Blueprint Gaming back in 2016. It represents a faithful remake of the original arcade version developed by Reel Time Gaming (RTG) in 2014, which was distributed using Merkur Gaming cabinets.

The Blueprint version retains the classic look and simple mechanics with just 10 paylines on a 5×3 grid layout. It also comes with high volatility, expanding Wilds, a Free Spins round, and an RTP of 96.31%.

If you’re wondering whether this game has more to it than meets the eye, keep reading this Eye of Horus slot review to find out.

Eye of Horus slot summary review

Despite being released in 2016, the simple layout and classic 2D design make Eye of Horus feel much older. It definitely leans into the classic-slot look and its arcade-style sound effects give it a real retro vibe that long-time players will appreciate.

The animations are present but extremely limited, while the graphics are clean but very old-school. The expanding Wilds tell you that this slot isn’t quite as old as it looks. They add some much-needed depth to gameplay.

The Upgrade Symbol in the Free Games round also adds an extra layer of depth to an otherwise straightforward setup. That said, high volatility means you can expect plenty of winless runs before hitting anything worthwhile.

If you enjoy Egyptian-themed slots but want something that feels more modern, you might prefer titles like Book of Golden Sands by Pragmatic Play or Cat Wilde and the Lost Chapter by Play’n GO.

Eye of Horus comprehensive review

This Eye of Horus slot review covers all the key components that define this classic slot game, including its design layout and payout structure. I’ll also be breaking down its volatility, RTP, theme, and how it performs during testing.

This way, you can make a judgment call on whether this slot is worth your time checking out.

RTP and volatility

The Eye of Horus RTP sits at 96.31%, although Blueprint’s website notes that certain variants may be configured at 92.04% depending on the operator. The slot uses a classic 5×3 grid layout with 10 paylines and high volatility throughout.

Wins are paid from left to right with only the highest line win paid on each line. The top payout of 500x is based on your bet per line and not your total stake.

The game’s RTP teeters ever so slightly above the industry average of 96%. From my experience, Eye of Horus can take you through some winless runs, so that slightly above-average RTP does give a bit of breathing room.

However, having only 10 paylines makes the game super restrictive. Not only does it severely limit your chances of building any momentum, but it also doesn’t do much to help with the game’s already unforgiving volatility.

What makes this situation even worse is the fact that only the highest win is paid per line. It’s a cheap and unnecessary move that just makes the slot that much harder to enjoy. I get these games are meant to be skewed in favor of the house, but at the end of the day, they’re still meant to be fun and give players a fighting chance.

Bonus features

The Eye of Horus slot features expanding Wilds that appear in the base game as well as in the Free Spins bonus round. The Wild symbol is depicted as the Egyptian god Horus, shown as a humanoid figure with a falcon head.

These Wilds expand to cover the whole reel and can only appear on reels 2, 3, and 4. Once expanded, they substitute for all paying symbols except Scatters, which appear as an entrance to a temple.

Landing three or more Scatters anywhere on the grid triggers the Free Games round, instantly awarding you with the maximum of 12 free spins. Here, the expanding Wilds serve an additional purpose.

During the bonus game, expanding Wilds activate the Symbol Upgrade feature. This essentially levels up high-paying symbols to the next paid tier. This can theoretically keep happening until all high-paying symbols reach the highest tier. The game’s highest paying symbol, the Eye of Horus, cannot be upgraded.

Expanding Wilds can also award extra free spins. One Wild adds one free spin, two Wilds earn you three additional spins, and three or more Wilds rewards you with five free spins.

Despite the game’s very basic design, I was impressed to see expanding Wilds and thought their added function in the Free Games round worked really well. The downside is that they’re incredibly hard to land, and even when they do hit, you might not even trigger a win.

The Symbol Upgrade Feature was very creative and added value to the bonus round by increasing payout potential. However, ultimately, it doesn’t replace the fact that there are no real multipliers in the game.

Furthermore, with no Bonus Buy option, I only managed to trigger the Free Games mode once. Even then, I landed a total of one expanding Wild, which to be honest, was super disappointing.

Symbols and paytable

Eye of Horus is a classic slot game made up of 11 paying symbols. These are split between four low-paying card icons (A, K, Q, and J), six high-paying picture symbols, and one hybrid symbol that also acts as a Scatter.

Wins are formed with either three, four, or five matching symbols on a payline, with payouts made from left to right. The slot uses a classic line bet configuration. This means that your total bet per spin is divided equally across all 10 paylines.

So, if you’re betting $5 per spin, your line bet becomes $0.50. The values shown on the paytable are then applied as multipliers to that line bet. For instance, landing five Eye of Horus symbols pay 500x your line bet, or $250 (500 x 0.50 = 250).

For those of you not familiar with classic line-bet formats and how they work, the payout structure of Eye of Horus may take some getting used to. It’s pretty old-school and was quite typical of land-based slots or early online versions.

Many modern slot titles simply display the total bet value. However, some games, like The Dog House by Pragmatic Play, still give you the option to toggle coins per line, coin values, or total bet. Eye of Horus works in a similar way, although it keeps things simpler by showing your total bet per spin and the bet-per-line amount it converts to.

Personally, I don’t really mind this system, but I can definitely see how this setup might alienate some players. It’s not the most intuitive format and may even discourage people from even trying out Eye of Horus in the first place.

How to play Eye of Horus

Eye of Horus does have a free demo version available, but they are hard to come by and prone to occasional glitches. That said, they are out there but if you can’t find one, you’ll simply have to try out the real-money version from the get-go instead.

The game comes with a bet range of $0.10 – $100. To adjust the size of your wager per spin, select the bet button located adjacent to the reels on the left-hand side. The spin button is located on the other side as a big circular arrow.

The autoplay option, depicted as two circular arrows, can be found on the bottom right-hand corner of your screen. This allows you to choose from a number of preset options ranging from 10 up to 100 auto-spins. Once you select your range, autoplay starts immediately but can be stopped at any time by pressing the button again.

Finally, the hamburger icon represented by three horizontal lines on the bottom left-hand corner allows you to toggle the sound on or off, view the paytable and symbol values, and select the “?” for a full breakdown of how everything works.

Expert verdict

Honestly, Egyptian-themed slots are a dime a dozen and this one isn’t going to set the world alight by any stretch of the imagination. That said, there are a couple of unique and truly innovative features that I believe are worth checking out.

Firstly, the fact the game has Wilds that expand to cover the whole reel is a pretty neat feature in my book. However, the standout mechanic here is the Symbol Upgrade feature, which I feel is a really clever way of adding suspense and extra value to gameplay.

Otherwise, the setup is very basic and there’s no quick-spin option. There’s also no real soundtrack, and the sound effects feel like they belong in an arcade. This isn’t a bad thing but then again, it doesn’t exactly add to the atmosphere and makes the whole experience feel a bit flat.

At the end of the day, if you’re someone who enjoys straightforward gameplay and appreciate the nostalgia of classic Egyptian-style slots, then Eye of Horus does have some weight to it. Aside from that, it doesn’t have great return value.
