Expert verdict

King Show Games took the popular land-based slot game and introduced it online, hoping for the same popularity. I think there are a lot of features that would have made this a popular choice, but by today’s standards, there’s room to improve.

The payout potential on Lobstermania is great, with a max win of 11,250x and even the lowest-paying symbol awarding 150x your stake for five symbols. Despite the low RTP of 94.01% and high volatility, I found the slot paid out fairly frequently, though not as many of the big wins I expected with that high max win. It’s the low bet range that lets the slot down here, as a max bet of $15 can only go so far.

When it comes to bonus features, the slot has an innovative bonus game but stops there. The Buoy Bonus is quite unique and brings a lot to the game, including the potential for big wins. I was disappointed to find, however, that there aren’t even free spins on this slot, which is limiting overall. With such a playful slot and the potential for some decent payouts, there was also room to include at least one more bonus feature, besides the Wild and scatter.

From a visual perspective, while Lobstermania is playful and charming, it does look dated. The 3D work needs refining in particular, though it doesn’t detract too much from the player experience. What is a strong point in the audiovisuals, however, is all the small details and animations that make this slot feel cohesive and immersive.

  • 11,250x max win
  • Buoy Bonus game can maximize wins
  • Good payout potential
  • High volatility
  • Bet range of $0.15–$15
  • Limited bonus features

Lucky Larry’s Lobstermania slot RTP and volatility

Lobstermania has an RTP of 94.01% and high volatility. There are 15 paylines and symbols need to land on at least one payline, starting from the leftmost reel, for a win.

Payout facts

CategoryDetails
RTP94.01%
Maximum win11,250x
Highest-paying symbolLobstermania symbol
VolatilityHigh

The slot has ten paying symbols, including the Wild and Scatter symbols. The eight symbols are all objects connected with the sea, such as a starfish, seagull, lighthouse, and Larry’s boat. The starfish is the lowest-paying symbol, paying out 5x for three symbols and 150x for five symbols. The Scatter symbol pays out a little better, at 200x for five.

At the other end of the scale, the Wild pays out 5x for two symbols and 10,000x for five, with the Lobstermania symbol next in line as the second highest-paying symbol. This pays out 1,000x for five symbols. The Lobstermania slot also has a max win of 11,250x your stake.

When I was looking into the slot, I played both the demo and for real money to test it out. With the demo, however, there was a discrepancy in the payouts given. The paytable has the same values as when you play for real money, but when you start spinning the reels the payouts you receive are much smaller.

Payouts rating

63/100 Strong payout potential
  • Good payouts
  • Max win potential of 11,250x
  • High volatility
  • Demo uses different values

Lobstermania’s payouts are good and the payout values also increase quite well with each symbol, except for the oyster and seagull which have the same values.

To compare, Big Bass Bonanza, a popular fishing-themed slot, has lower payouts than Lobstermania. If you set the bet on both slots to a bet of $0.30, on Big Bass three of the lowest symbol pay $0.15, and five pay $3. On Lobstermania, it’s $1.50 for three, and $45 for five, which is 15x more.

The issue with the demo version treating payouts differently than indicated in the paytable bothered me. First, after reading the paytable and understanding how wins are awarded, and then experiencing something quite different, I was very confused. My wins on the demo were so much smaller than the paytable stated they would be.

For example, if my bet is set to $0.75 and I land four starfish, my win is 30x my bet. This should be $22.50, but the slot awarded me $1.50. This comes across as misleading and it’s not clear why the demo would treat the payouts differently. If you want to try out the demo before playing for money, just be aware.

Despite its high volatility and low RTP of 94.01%, I found the slot paid out fairly frequently. Due to the low RTP, not all of my wins were big ones, but better than I expected from this slot.

The max win of 11,250x is pretty good, and I can see how there’s the possibility for such a big win. With the Wild having a potential payout of 10,000x your bet, and even the Lobstermania symbol paying out 1,000x, there’s room for some bigger wins that could lead to a max win of 11,250x.

Stakes on Lucky Larry’s Lobstermania

The bet range on the version of Lobstermania that I played was $0.15–$15. Other versions had the same bet range, but I also came across some demos that mentioned a bet range of $0.25—$250. That’s quite a different bet range, so check that out before you start playing.

Stake limits rating

70/100 Maximum bet is disappointing
  • Comfortable betting options
  • Bet range of $0.15–$15

A maximum bet of $15 is disappointing and is one of the lowest I’ve seen. For comparison, Pragmatic Play’s Big Bass Bonanza has a bet range of $0.10–$250. So it starts lower than Lobstermania and its max bet is around 16x higher. With a max win potential of 11,250x, a higher max bet would have been a really big plus, particularly for high-rollers.

What is positive when it comes to placing bets is the betting increments. There are 19 betting options, which all increase in decent-sized increments. Starting at 0.15 until 0.9, there are five increments of just 0.15, which offers a lot of comfortable control over how much you want to bet. After that, it’s increments of 0.3 and they continue to become a little bigger until hitting 15. So while the betting range is small, there’s a lot of room to move within it.

Lucky Larry’s Lobstermania slot bonus features

Lobstermania has a Wild and scatter symbol. The Wild is a funky red lobster, complete with sunglasses and the word ‘Wild’ above it. The Wild substitutes for all symbols, except the scatter and Buoy Bonus symbol, while also having its own payout values when landing from two up to five Wilds.

The scatter symbol is a lobster in a lobster trap. Wins are awarded for symbols that appear anywhere on the reels.

Apart from the Wild and the scatter, Lobstermania has one unique bonus feature: the Buoy Bonus. This is triggered when three of the bonus symbol land on the reels. The bonus symbol is a red lobster in a yellow oilskin jacket and hat, with the text ‘Lobstermania’ at the bottom.

Once the bonus feature is triggered, the base game reels freeze and you are asked to pick one from the three bonus symbols to reveal how many buoys you’ll be awarded. This ranges from two to four buoys. After choosing your symbol, your award is revealed, along with the awards of the other two symbols.

The scene changes from the base game to the bonus game, where Larry greets us on his boat at sea, with nine buoys floating in front of him. He asks you to choose the number of buoys you were awarded from those available.

Larry pulls in the lobster trap and starts pulling things out of it to see which prizes you have won. This could be small lobsters, normal-sized lobsters, and even monster-sized ones. There can also be tin cans and toilet seats. Once all the prizes have been pulled from the trap, your total for each buoy is added together to reveal your final win.

Bonus features rating

45/100 There’s room for more
  • Innovative bonus game
  • Buoy Bonus can maximize winnings
  • No free spins
  • Limited bonus features

The Buoy Bonus is a unique and innovative bonus feature, and it’s one of the better parts of this slot. Choosing your symbol to reveal how many buoys you get has a kind of game show vibe to it and adds some dynamism to what can otherwise be considered a pretty standard slot game.

It’s also a nice touch that the bonus game involves Larry the fisherman. There’s a small feeling of suspense each time Larry pulls something out of the lobster trap, and it’s quite amusing when he pulls something out that clearly isn’t a lobster. He comments on each item he pulls out too, which is part of the experience.

Each item carries its own payout value, some of them quite big, so there’s room for some decent wins in the Buoy Bonus. I landed the bonus game twice, so it can come up quite frequently. In both attempts, my wins were quite big too, and helped to boost my bankroll.

As part of the bonus features, there’s also a Wild and a scatter, which are common features in slots that serve a purpose nonetheless. The Wild does come up quite often and assists in forming wins. In fact, quite a few of my wins were thanks to the Wild. The scatter lands on the reels quite frequently too and did contribute to a few of my wins, though I never landed more than three scatters at a time.

All that said, the Buoy Bonus is pretty much the main bonus feature in this game, which is disappointing and it limits the player experience overall. The slot doesn’t even have free spins available, which a lot of players look out for when selecting a game. So while the Buoy Bonus is a good bonus game, there was space to include more.

Lucky Larry’s Lobstermania audiovisuals

Lobstermania makes use of both 2D and 3D images. Most of the symbols are 2D, apart from the Wild lobster, which is 3D. The grid’s border is made up of 2D pieces of driftwood, dotted with different colored buoys that identify where the different paylines sit.

The background of the game window is built in 3D, with the sea and a lighthouse behind the grid. The grid sits on top of a sandy beach with rocks scattered around. When the game switches to the Buoy Bonus, a different design style is used and everything is 3D. Overall, the Lobstermania slot has decent graphics with lots of color.

The slot uses the song ‘Rock Lobster’ by the B-52’s as its background track. Snippets of the song play while the reels are spinning, then stop suddenly when the reels finish.

The higher-paying symbols also have their own winning animations paired with a winning jingle or sound. These animations are specific to the object in the symbol. For example, if the winning symbols are buoys then the buoys are animated to look like they’re floating at sea. The associated sound is of the buoys rocking back and forth.

The Scatter symbol, a lobster in a trap, animates on landing a win too. The lobster moves from side to side, shaking the trap, and the sound paired with it is of the lobster moving.

Larry speaks throughout the Buoy Bonus. He tells the player various phrases, including the bonus game instructions, and comments on the prizes he pulls out of the trap.

Audiovisuals rating

73/100 Fun, cartoonish audiovisuals
  • Vibrant visuals
  • Cohesive slot design
  • Music stops too abruptly
  • Design looks dated

I think the best part of the audiovisuals in Lobstermania is all the small details that work to make the slot feel cohesive. Things like the symbol-specific sounds and animations bring the slot to life, creating an immersive feeling of being out at sea.

The B-52’s ‘Rock Lobster’ is a well-chosen background track for this song, both for its name and for the catchy upbeat rhythm it brings to the game. It does get a little annoying though, especially as the tune stops abruptly each time the reels stop so you never hear the track play all the way through.

The game overall looks ok and most of the visuals are decent. It’s a playful slot and pops with color, but it does look dated. Especially anything that’s been designed in 3D. Even Larry’s voice comes off a bit stiff and robotic, though it’s great when he does speak. His one-liners are amusing.

Lucky Larry’s Lobstermania slot game layout

The Lobstermania slot works with a 5×3 layout, with all the important buttons found on the right of the grid.

This includes the spin, autospin, turbo spin, and betting buttons. There’s also a button with three dots, which brings up the paytable, game rules, and mute button. Underneath the slot, there’s the balance, current win, and current bet.

The autospin has the option to spin 10, 20, 50, 100, or 250 times but doesn’t have any further settings. The turbo spin can be switched on and off by pressing the button. It makes the reels spin about 1.5 seconds faster. You can also click on the reels to skip the animations and end the spin.

The slot works great on mobile in both portrait and landscape mode. The buttons move to the base of the game window, making them easy to reach with your thumbs. You can even tap the reels to skip the animations and the end of the spin. The grid takes up a large portion of the game window, making the symbols clear and easy to see.

Game layout rating

86/100 Decent game layout with room for improvement
  • Works great on mobile
  • Autospin and turbo spin
  • No game history
  • Limited autospin

Getting around the slot is fine as all the buttons are grouped together and within your immediate eyeline. The paytable and game rules contain everything else you’ll need, except for your game history, which is not available.

The autospin has a good range, going up to 250 autospins, but I have come across slots with more autospins, such as Dead or Alive 1 with 1000 autospins. What is more limiting, however, is the lack of additional autospin settings. A loss or win limit would have been good to include as it helps to safeguard the player from overspending.

The turbo spin is faster than a regular spin, though it still requires you to go through the reel rotations. I found it quicker to just press the reels and skip the animations altogether. This is much more comfortable to do on mobile by just tapping the reels. The slot is a little more comfortable to play on mobile in fact, both in portrait or landscape mode. It’s just easier to see and is adapted well to be able to reach things with your thumbs.
