Le Bandit slot review summary

Le Bandit drops you into a Parisian back alley where Smokey Le Bandit, a scowling raccoon with a crowbar and a flat cap, lurks beside a 6×5 cluster pays grid. Le Bandit launched the “Le” slots series that has since spawned over a dozen sequels, and it’s not hard to see why.

Smokey reacts to what happens on the reels, switching disguises as you move through the bonus modes, which gives the game a liveliness that most cluster slots lack. The core mechanic is layered, where clusters build Golden Squares, Golden Squares wait for a Rainbow, and the Rainbow reveals coins that can compound through Clovers and Pots of Gold into substantial wins.

Three Free Spins modes escalate that loop, with the top-tier Treasure at the End of the Rainbow guaranteeing a Rainbow on every single spin. It’s aimed at players who want an engaging base game with real bonus depth, though the four RTP versions (ranging from 96.34% down to 88.36%) mean the version at your online casino is worth checking before you play.

Pros

  • 96.34% RTP, above market average

  • 3 escalating Free Spins modes

  • Bonus buy available with 4 options

Cons

  • Top symbol pays 1x your stake for a 5-cluster

  • Treasure at the End of the Rainbow cannot be purchased

  • Four operator-selectable RTP versions (down to 88.36%)

Le Bandit comprehensive review

In this Le Bandit slot review, I’ll cover everything you need to know before playing. That includes the RTP and volatility, the Super Cascade and Golden Squares mechanics, the three Free Spins modes and how they differ, the full paytable, and how to get started.

RTP and volatility

The default RTP for this slot is 96.34%. Other available versions are 94.23%, 92.17%, and 88.36%, and all four are selectable by operators, so the version at your casino may differ.

VolatilityMedium

The feature buy versions carry their own RTPs: BonusHunt FeatureSpins has 96.28%, Rainbow FeatureSpins has 96.36%, Luck of the Bandit has 96.3%, and All That Glitters Is Gold has 96.4% RTP.

Volatility is rated medium, and the hit frequency sits at 32.47%, meaning a win lands roughly once every three spins.

Time2play Expert Analysis

The four RTP versions are the first thing I check with any Hacksaw slot. The gap between 96.34% and 88.36% is enormous, and plenty of casinos run the lower settings.

On the 96.34% version the session is noticeably more generous since Rainbows arrive with enough frequency that Golden Squares can accumulate before they’re cleared.

I played a 50-spin session on the default 96.34% version at a $0.10 stake and hit three Rainbow activations in the base game, one of which produced a 18x return from a Pot of Gold.

That’s a solid base game hit without touching the bonus at all, but it only happened because the RTP version allowed that frequency.

Bonus features

Le Bandit’s feature set has layers, with a base game cascade mechanic that feeds into a coin-collection system, reaching its full potential in three escalating Free Spins modes.

Super Cascade

When a winning cluster forms, all symbols of that type anywhere on the grid are removed, not just the winning cluster itself. New symbols drop in to fill the gaps, and the process repeats until no new wins form.

This is the mechanic that gives Le Bandit its rhythm: a single cluster can clear a large portion of the grid, create cascades, and build up Golden Squares across multiple positions in one spin.

Win to Win (Golden Squares)

Every position that was part of a winning cluster gets highlighted as a Golden Square after the symbols disappear. These squares stay on the grid and wait. When a Rainbow symbol lands after all cluster wins for that spin have been paid, every Golden Square on the grid activates, each revealing a Bronze Coin (0.2x, 0.5x, 1x, 2x, 3x, or 4x your stake), a Silver Coin (5x, 10x, 15x, or 20x), a Gold Coin (25x, 50x, 100x, 250x, or 500x), a Four-Leaf Clover, or a Pot of Gold.

After all coins and special symbols have been revealed, Four-Leaf Clovers activate and multiply any Coins or Pots of Gold on adjacent squares by 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x, or 10x. Then Pots of Gold activate, each collecting the total value of all Coins and other Pots of Gold in view.

After the last Pot of Gold collects, all remaining Golden Squares reactivate once more, giving you another round of reveals. In the base game, Golden Squares reset between spins unless a bonus is active.

Free Spins

The FS scatter symbol is a Polaroid camera with “FS” printed on the front. Land 3, 4, or 5 to enter one of three modes.

  • Luck of the Bandit (3 scatters, 8 Free Spins): All Golden Squares remain highlighted between spins until they are activated by a Rainbow symbol. This means squares from early in the round accumulate across spins until a Rainbow activates everything at once. Land 4 scatters to upgrade to All That Glitters Is Gold with +4 additional spins.
  • All That Glitters Is Gold (4 scatters, 12 Free Spins): Golden Squares remain highlighted throughout the entire feature, and even after they’ve been activated by a Rainbow, they can be activated again on subsequent Rainbows. As the round progresses, the grid fills with Golden Squares that refresh with new coin values each time a Rainbow lands.
  • Treasure at the End of the Rainbow (5 scatters, 12 Free Spins): The same Golden Squares mechanic as All That Glitters Is Gold, with two enhancements: a Rainbow symbol is guaranteed to land on every single spin, and Bronze Coins do not appear, only Silver, Gold, Clovers, and Pots of Gold.

Bonus Buy

Four purchase options are available:

  • BonusHunt FeatureSpins at 3x stake gives each spin a 5x higher chance of triggering a bonus.
  • Rainbow FeatureSpins at 50x stake guarantees a Rainbow symbol on each spin.
  • Luck of the Bandit at 100x stake delivers the 8-spin bonus directly.
  • All That Glitters Is Gold at 250x stake delivers the 12-spin bonus directly.

Treasure at the End of the Rainbow bonus round cannot be purchased.

Time2play Expert Analysis

All That Glitters Is Gold at 250x is where the game really shows what it can do. I bought in for €25 at a €0.10 stake and came out with €41.95 over 12 spins, which is 419.5x my bet. One spin alone paid 254x from a single Pot of Gold collecting a grid that had been building squares for several spins. That’s the mechanic at its best: wait, let the grid fill, then collect everything at once.

Luck of the Bandit is more variable. Eight spins isn’t a lot, and if Rainbows don’t land early you can spend half the round watching squares build with nothing to show for it. All That Glitters Is Gold fixes that, since squares stay active after each activation and keep building across all 12 spins.

Honestly, if you’re buying a bonus, skip Luck of the Bandit and go straight to All That Glitters Is Gold. BonusHunt FeatureSpins at 3x is good for longer sessions where you just want more bonus triggers, but the results are inconsistent. Rainbow FeatureSpins at 50x guarantees a Rainbow every spin, but without the persistent squares it doesn’t compound the way the full bonus does.

Symbols and paytable

The symbol set is built around the Parisian crime theme, with card royals alongside traps, cheese, beer mugs, baguettes, and the Top Hat as the highest-paying premium.

The five card royals (10, J, Q, K, A) are all identical and pay 0.1x for a 5-cluster up to 15x for 13+. The Trap and Cheese symbols are the next tier up, paying 0.3x for 5 up to 25x for 13+. Beer and Baguettes sit above those at 0.5x for 5 up to 50x for 13+. The Top Hat is the highest-paying symbol at 1x for 5, rising to 100x for 13+. The Wanted Reward poster is the Wild and substitutes for all symbols.

Even at the top of the paytable, 1x for a 5-cluster Top Hat is not great. Symbol wins exist to build Golden Squares, not to pay you directly. A base game spin that chains several cascades and fires a Rainbow into a well-stocked grid can return multiples of your stake without touching the bonus at all, and that’s where the value actually comes from.

Time2play Expert Analysis

The paytable here is thin by design, and that’s worth knowing before you play. A 5-cluster of the Top Hat, which is the best regular symbol, pays 1x your stake. The Trap and Cheese symbols pay 0.3x for a 5-cluster. The royals pay 0.1x. These numbers are so low that individual symbol hits are basically irrelevant to your session.

What matters is the cascade chain that builds Golden Squares, and how many squares are on the grid when the Rainbow finally lands. A spin where you clear most of the grid through cascades and then fire a Rainbow into a dozen Golden Squares can return 20x or 30x without touching Free Spins at all.

The flip side is that dry spins feel genuinely dry. When clusters don’t form or Rainbows don’t land, there’s nothing to keep you going really. The 32.47% hit frequency keeps things moving, but stretches where small clusters form without a collection can make the base game feel slow, so this slot requires more patience than most.

Casinos where to play Le Bandit slot

Le Bandit is available at online casinos carrying the Hacksaw Gaming catalog. Because the game ships with four RTP versions, it’s worth checking the in-game info screen at your casino to confirm which version is in use before playing. Here are some of my recommendations.

Expert verdict

Le Bandit is the best entry point into the Hacksaw Gaming cluster pays format. The mechanics are layered but logical: Super Cascades build Golden Squares, Rainbows activate them, Clovers multiply adjacent values, Pots of Gold collect everything. Once you understand that loop, the three Free Spins modes make sense as escalating versions of the same system.

The medium volatility and 32.47% hit frequency mean the base game stays active, which matters when you’re waiting for Rainbows to land.

The main strength of the slot is All That Glitters Is Gold. Most bonus rounds have a ceiling you can see from the first spin, but this one has a ceiling that rises throughout the feature as Golden Squares accumulate and reactivate. A grid filled with persistent squares on the final few spins with stacking Pots of Gold can produce wins that make the 250x buy look pretty reasonable.

Treasure at the End of the Rainbow is the slot at its absolute peak, with guaranteed Rainbow every spin, no Bronze Coins, and persistent squares, but it can only be triggered naturally. Players who want that level of output without waiting for five scatters should go straight to the All That Glitters Is Gold buy. All in all, 96.34% RTP is above average, the base game is engaging, and Smokey is a character worth spending some time with.
