Crab Trap slot review summary

The Crab Trap slot is a playful fishing-themed game that will appeal to plenty of players. NetEnt’s worked hard on making the slot look good, with bright colors and smooth animations that bring it to life. In particular, the hooks that reach down and pull away the crab trap frames during re-spins are a particularly fun touch.

In terms of bonus features, the Crab Trap slot put all its efforts into its re-spins. It’s a lucrative feature that builds up throughout the game, which can deliver some big wins. Free spins are available too, either by landing multiple Scatters or by using the bonus buy.

As for the slot’s specs, it’s got an RTP of 96.07% and medium volatility. This allows for relatively frequent payouts, although they won’t be big ones. The Crab Trap slot has low average payouts, but the maximum win for this game is 1,100x your bet.

Time2play Expert Analysis

Crab Trap’s slot RTP is good. It sits on the industry average at 96.07%, meaning you should have a fairly balanced game, and paired with medium volatility, you could have some regular wins, although the average wins from this game are on the small side.

This is better than Lucky Larry’s Lobstermania, another fishing-themed slot, where the RTP is 94.01%. Such a low RTP visibly affects the slot’s hit rate.

Re-spins, blue boats, red boats, and crabs

When a blue boat symbol appears on the reels, it throws crab trap frames onto its own symbol position and up to five other random positions. These frames remain in place and accumulate until the red boat symbol appears.

The red boat symbol triggers the re-spins feature if there are at least five crab trap frames on the reels. During re-spins, the goal is to catch crabs within the symbol positions that have crab trap frames on them. So long as there are new crabs caught in the frames, the re-spins continue.

Single crab symbols can appear anywhere on the reels, and on reels 1-2 and 4-5 you can get 2×2 colossal crabs. 3×3 colossal crabs can appear on reels 1-3 and 4-6. The crabs can be partially or fully displayed, depending on how the reels land during the re-spin.

The single crab is worth 1, 2, 5, or 10x the current bet, while the 2×2 crab is worth 10, 20, 50, or 100x. With the 3×3 crab, you can get payouts of 100, 200, 500, or 1,000x your bet.

Once all the re-spins have been completed, your total win from the captured crabs is added up, and the trap frames with a win are taken away as hooks come down to lift them away. Crab trap frames that don’t have any wins remain on the reels.

Free spins

Landing three or more Scatter symbols anywhere on the reels will trigger the free spins feature. The scatter symbol is the life ring. The free spins awarded are as follows:

  • Three symbols = five free spins
  • Four symbols = seven free spins
  • Five symbols = 10 free spins
  • Six or more symbols = 15 free spins

Re-spins can also be triggered during free spins and will be played out before the next free spins. Additional Scatter symbols can also appear during free spins and are counted in a meter on top of the grid. Every three Scatter symbols will award one additional free spin.

Buy Feature

The buy feature can be used to trigger free spins for 50x the current bet. This automatically awards six free spins. When free spins are activated using the buy feature, the crab trap frames from the base game are saved and replaced with 10 new frames. When the free spins end, the original trap frames are returned to the base game reels.

Time2play Expert Analysis

NetEnt kept it sweet and simple when it came to the bonus features for its Crab Trap slot. What’s great is that the re-spins feature lasts throughout the entire game and can be triggered during the free spins feature. No complicated requirements, just one red boat is all that’s needed.

During my time testing the slot, the red boats appear somewhat frequently, giving you the chance to accumulate as many crab trap frames as possible. There was one round where I had 17 crab trap frames on the reels, and I caught crabs in 14 of them. The feature is definitely the highlight of the game, and it can be very lucrative.

I was hoping for some other additional features, like Wilds, but free spins and re-spins are a great pairing. If you’re looking for a fishing slot with more innovative bonus features, Super Sally’s Shrimpmania has plenty of them, with three different mini games.

Symbols and paytable

The Crab Trap slot works with Scatter pays, meaning wins aren’t awarded based on paylines. Wins are awarded when enough of the symbol is present anywhere on the reels.

There are eight paying symbols in NetEnt’s Crab Trap slot. The low-paying symbols are card symbols J, Q, K, and A. These four symbols offer the same payout values, awarding $1 on a bet of $1 for seven symbols, $2 for eight, $4 for nine, and $8 for 10 or more symbols.

The medium-win symbols are the starfish and the bucket of water. On a bet of $1, these two symbols require at least six symbols to win. You’ll get $1 for six symbols, $2 for seven, $4 for eight, and $8 for nine or more symbols.

The high-paying symbols are the fishing bobber and the boot. These symbols require a minimum of five for a win, awarding $0.40 when the bet is set to $1. With six symbols, you’ll get $1, and with seven, it’s $2.50. Eight symbols will award $5, and nine or more will award $10. When playing on the maximum bet of $800, the win is $8,000.

The maximum win on NetEnt’s Crab Trap slot is 1,100x your bet.

Time2play Expert Analysis

A maximum win of 1,100x is great, and one of the better ones I’ve come across recently. That being said, the average payouts are on the low side. I don’t expect to find such low payouts when a win consists of so many symbols. These are the payouts I expect when a win is made up of three or four symbols.

The highest-paying symbol on Twin Spin awards a payout of $2,000 for a bet of $50. With a bet of $50, nine boot symbols on the Crab Trap slot will just award $500. To get a payout of $2,000, your bet needs to be $200.

Expert verdict

NetEnt’s Crab Trap slot is definitely one worth trying out, and there’s little to be crabby about here. This slot will appear to different players for different reasons, but I think there’s something for every player.

The bet range, for instance, is very accessible, starting at $0.10. It increases slowly, meaning inexperienced players can get comfortable with the slot with smaller bets. For the high-rollers, the maximum bet hits $800, which can deliver much more rewarding wins, especially with a maximum win of 1,100x. The average wins are on the small side, however, so the bigger wins are more likely to come from the bonus features.

Free spins are always great to have, and re-spins are a feature that I like to see included. They bring some extra zest to what’s otherwise a pretty run-of-the-mill slot, and NetEnt has gone further by making its re-spins feature engaging.

I loved seeing the blue boat throw out the crab trap frames, hoping to accumulate as many as possible before a red boat appeared. It’s not the biggest selection of bonus features, but I feel there’s enough going on to keep players entertained.

In terms of the RTP and volatility, these will work for both inexperienced and veteran players. An RTP of 96.07% works for everyone, although the scatter pays format might not. It’s easier to get wins since you’re not restricted to paylines, but seeing more symbols award smaller payouts might be frustrating for some.
