Le Cowboy is among the newest additions to one of Hacksaw Gaming’s most successful slot series. Following the ubiquitous Smokey the Raccoon, this video slot incorporates three bonus games, a cascading feature, and the cluster pays win mechanic. On top of that, it has an above-average RTP of 96.28% and a decent max win of 25,000x. 

It does sound exciting on paper, but is it worth the hype? In our detailed Le Cowboy slot review, we break down the game’s features, gameplay, and win potential. We’ll also cover where you can play it and what you can expect before you start spinning the reels yourself.

This short overview of Le Cowboy has given you an inkling of what the game offers, but there’s still more to learn about its RTP, volatility, bonus features, symbols, and paytable.

RTP and volatility

The Le Cowboy RTP sits slightly above the industry average at 96.28%. The volatility is medium, which means the game rewards fairly frequently and in decent amounts.

The slot doesn’t have paylines. Instead, it relies on the cluster pays win mechanic, where you’re rewarded when the same symbols form a cluster of 5 or more. Larger clusters result in bigger payouts.

Time2play Expert Analysis I’ve always found that medium volatility pairs well with the cluster pays mechanic. It rewards just as much as you’d expect, somewhere in the middle. Big wins are unlikely here because of the said volatility, but also because the max bet is worth only $40. Sure, this means the top prize is $1 million, but that may not cut it for high-rollers. 

The RTP of 96.28% is quite admirable, given that anything above the 96% industry average is generally considered good by slot fans.

Bonus features

Besides the cluster pay mechanic, Le Cowboy features Super Cascades, Revolver Reveals, and 3 bonus games called High Noon Saloon, Trail of Trickery, and Pistols at Dawn.

Super Cascades

This feature causes all winning symbols from the grid to disappear after every win. At the same time, new ones drop in their place, giving you another chance to win. 

Revolver Reveals

Whenever a winning cluster has a wild in it, it will transform into the Revolver Cylinder scatter. This scatter will contain between 2 and 6 shots, which are fired as soon as the spin is done. Each shot targets a symbol on the grid and transforms it into a special symbol:

• Reload symbol: It reloads the revolver, which in turn reveals new special symbols or even upgrades some that got hit more than once. 
• Coin symbols: There are bronze, silver, and gold coins, each with increasing multipliers: up to 4x, 20x, and 100x, respectively. 
• Diamond symbols: These have values of 150x, 250x, and 500x. 
• Loot bag symbols: These collect the values of all coins, diamonds, and other loot bags. Once that’s done, these symbols disappear, making room for new ones that can be collected, too.
• Clover symbols: Green clovers multiply coins, diamonds, or loot bags sitting next to them on the grid up to 20x. Gold clovers have the same effect, but they apply to all coins, diamonds, or loot bags on the grid, not just the adjacent ones. 

Bonus game 1: High Noon Saloon

The High Noon Saloon bonus game is activated when you land 3 FS scatters. Once it’s triggered, you get to pick the bonus round with 10 free spins or gamble for a chance to receive one of several alternative prizes:

• FS scatter symbol, which triggers the Trail of Trickery bonus game
• Bronze coin symbol, which brings you a reward worth up to 4x the stake
• Silver coin symbol, which brings you a reward worth up to 20x the stake
• Gold coin symbol, which brings you a reward worth up to 100x the stake

During High Noon Saloon, the game’s mechanics remain the same, but the chances of triggering the Revolver Reveals feature increase. 

If you manage to land 2 FS symbols, you’ll get an additional 2 spins. If you land 3, you’ll get 4 more. 

Bonus game 2: Trail of Trickery

You trigger the Trail of Trickery by landing 4 FS scatters. Just like with the first bonus game, you get a choice. Take 10 free spins, or gamble for a chance to win a potentially bigger reward:

• FS scatter symbol, which triggers the hidden bonus game Pistols at Dawn
• Silver coin symbol, which gets you a win worth up to 20x the stake
• Gold coin symbol, which gets you a win worth up to 100x the stake
• Diamond symbol, which gets you a win worth up to 500x the stake

The mechanics of Le Cowboy remain the same in Trail of Trickery, but you also get Bullet Collector, which is positioned on the outside of the grid. Every time you land a win, a bullet will be added to this collector. Once the free spins are done, the bullets will shoot at the grid, sending special symbols your way, much like the Revolver Reveals feature. 

This bonus also awards additional spins if you land 2 or 3 FS symbols. 

Bonus game 3 (hidden bonus game): Pistols at Dawn

This bonus game is activated when you land 5 FS scatters. It triggers 10 free spins, but there’s no option to gamble. 

The mechanics are the same, but the Bullet Collector becomes progressive, starting at 5 and triggering after every free spin. Every time this happens, it resets to its previous value. 

The lowest coin symbol you can get during this bonus game is silver. However, FS symbols can’t land during this round. 

Bonus buy options

With the bonus buy option, 4 different features are up for purchase:

• BonusHunt FeatureSpins: Each spin becomes 4x more likely to trigger a bonus game. This option costs 3x the bet and increases the volatility to high. 
• Wild West FeatureSpins: Every spin gives you at least 2 wilds. The option costs 75x the stake and also raises the volatility to high.
• High Noon Saloon: This option activates the corresponding bonus game, giving you 10 free spins or the chance to gamble them. It costs 65x the stake and leaves volatility at medium. 
• Trail of Trickery: This one activates the corresponding bonus game, giving you 10 free spins alongside Bullet Collector, which triggers additional Revolver Reveals, or the chance to gamble. It costs 250x the bet and sets the volatility to high.

Time2play Expert Analysis I rarely come across a slot with such a diverse set of good features. Nolimit City’s Tombstone Begins is a game with a similar theme and features. However, it has a somewhat lower RTP of 96.02%, and it’s a gritty Wild West slot, not a cheerful one like Le Cowboy.

Even though the bonus games are where the biggest prizes are, the Revolver Reveals feature is still the highlight to me. It’s at the core of all bonus games and ties everything together. Plus, the fact that you can buy it is a nice touch. Technically, you can buy all of them, except the hidden bonus, which isn’t usually the case. However, you can burn through your bankroll quickly if you lean too heavily on bonus buys. I had to keep that pistol in my holster, as it’s easy to get carried away. 

Without it, though, I felt like bonus games were very hard to trigger. Plus, I didn’t like the Gamble feature, as the rewards are rarely worth the price if you’re paying for the bonus. For instance, only the 100x Gold Coin symbol in the first bonus game covers the 65x cost of buying the round. With 7 coin options you can trigger, the chances of landing that one aren’t good.

Symbols and paytable

Besides the special symbols that are a part of the Revolver Reveals feature, the wilds, and the scatters, Le Cowboy has 10 regular symbols.

Half of them are low-paying cards, 10, J, Q, K, and A. 

The other five include the cowboy hat and the cactus, which pay up to 75x, the guns and the skull, which award up to 100x, and the highest-paying sheriff’s badge, up to 200x. 

All symbols start paying when you connect 5 in a cluster. The biggest prizes come from larger clusters of 14 or more, which is almost half the grid.

Time2play Expert Analysis Le Cowboy has a symbol setup that you’d expect from a slot with such a big grid and the cluster pays mechanic. During the base game, a total of 12 matching symbols can appear on a grid with 30 spots, which isn’t bad. There’s enough real estate for all, but you should still expect to typically connect 5 to 9 of them. 

In terms of payouts, the base game can feel a bit restrained. Most symbols only pay around the value of your stake for clusters of up to 8 symbols. Real rewards worth 10x the stake and more only begin when you hit 12 clustered symbols. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that the base game rewarded me with smaller amounts in most cases. I only won big during bonus games or from the Revolver Reveals.

How to play Le Cowboy

Le Cowboy is a relatively simple game. Even though the features take a bit of time to understand, you can still follow what’s happening on the grid. 

The slot itself works in a standard way. You adjust your stake using straightforward buttons, and you can start spinning the reels immediately after. There’s also an autoplay feature, which lets you set the number of spins (10, 25, 50, 75, 100, 500, or 1,000), as well as a loss or single win limit. You can even stop it whenever you get a special-feature win.

If you prefer faster gameplay, you can take advantage of the Turbo or Super Turbo modes. These can be applied to the base game, bonus game, or both.

Expert verdict

Le Cowboy stands out as one of the best releases in Hacksaw Gaming’s Le slot series. It offers a relatively high RTP and one of the highest max wins in the lineup. On top of that, the feature selection is great, especially the 3 bonus games. 

It’s not without its flaws, though. It’s got relatively low win rates, and triggering a feature without a bonus buy is pretty difficult. Still, these shortcomings don’t necessarily diminish the slot’s originality or overall engagement.

It’s primarily designed for casual gamers, especially those who appreciate the calm of medium-volatility slots. At the same time, high rollers will likely get more from it by using the bonus buy option, which ramps up volatility and win potential.
