With added bonus features and a boosted win cap of 9,000x, The Dog House Multihold is an enhanced version of Pragmatic Play’s 2019 hit, The Dog House.

Released in 2023 by the same game developer, The Dog House Multihold has an RTP rating of 96.06% during the base game. The 5×3 slot comes with high volatility and 20 paylines.

This version also introduces a Buy Feature, but the main twist lies in its bonus game, where players can unlock multiple reel grids for greater payout potential. To find out more about how this works, check out my take in this The Dog House Multihold slot review.

The Dog House Multihold slot summary review

The Dog House Multihold retains the bright and charming nature of the original The Dog House slot, complete with the same colorful dogs and cartoon-like aesthetic. The audio has been tweaked slightly, offering a more mellow rhythm compared to the bouncier soundtrack of the first game.

The slot is renowned for its simple mechanics but don’t be fooled, the game’s bonus round delivers plenty of entertainment and is unrecognizable compared to the first game. Its multi-grid setup is unique, fun, and packed with potential.

Plus, the slots’s maximum win potential, coupled with high volatility and an above-average RTP, gives the gameplay a bit of an edge. Overall, it’s a familiar but refreshing take on the original, with just enough new features to make it worth trying.

Pros

  • Unique bonus game

  • 9,000x max win

  • Sticky Wilds and Scatters in bonus round

Cons

  • Lower RTP compared to original

  • No progressive jackpots

  • Base game identical to original

The Dog House Multihold comprehensive review

In this The Dog House Multihold review, I’ll be covering all the core elements that shape this slot game. In it, I’ll inevitably draw comparisons from the original release by the same developer. This way, you can make a more informed decision on whether this version is worth your time.

RTP and volatility

During the base game, this slot has a theoretical RTP of 96.06%, which rises slightly to 96.08% during the bonus round.

The 5×3 grid layout remains consistent, though it can be duplicated across multiple game grids during the free spins feature. Otherwise, volatility stays high throughout, and all wins are calculated left to right across 20 fixed paylines.

If you’re comparing The Dog House Multihold to the original, the base game is virtually identical, with the only discernible difference being the slight drop in RTP. It’s only marginal, but it’s still a downgrade nonetheless.

That said, the high volatility also feels consistent with the first release. In fact, after about 50 spins on the Dog House Multihold, I didn’t manage to trigger the bonus or land any significant wins.

Using an identical grid layout and the same amount of paylines, the game is pretty much business as usual until the bonus kicks in.

Bonus features

You can trigger the bonus game by landing three Scatter symbols on reels 1, 3, and 5. The Scatter symbol is identified by a paw shaped red gem with the word Bonus written underneath it.

Alternatively, you can manually activate the free spins bonus round by selecting the ‘Buy Free Spins’ button. Located on the left-hand side, adjacent to the reels, this bonus buy feature costs 100x your stake and instantly unlocks the free spins round.

Once triggered, you are immediately awarded with seven free spins. The game also transforms, dividing itself into four separate grids. The top left-hand grid is the first to become active, featuring a minimized version of the slot with the same 5×3 layout.

The spins are auto-generated and you need to land three more Scatter symbols to unlock the next grid. However, unlike in the base game, the Scatters don’t need to land in a single spin and are instead accumulated until you hit three, or until your spins run out.

When a new grid unlocks, a duplicate 5×3 reel set is added to the screen. This process repeats itself until you run out of free spins or if you unlock all remaining grids. Winning combinations from each unlocked grid are calculated separately before being added at the end of the bonus.

Bear in mind, the Scatter symbols only appear in the last unlocked grid. Furthermore, you also earn up to one, two, or three free spins for every unlocked grid.

The bonus feature also comes with special reels, meaning you are more likely to land Scatters and Wilds. The Wild symbols also appear in the base game and can come attached with multipliers ranging from 2x to 3x.

Represented by a dog kennel, the Wilds become sticky in the bonus game, meaning they remain locked in place for the entire bonus. When a new grid unlocks, any sticky Wilds from the previous grid are copied onto the newly unlocked one. Only newly unlocked grids can spawn new sticky Wilds.

The Dog House Multihold bonus game proved to be a lot more entertaining than the original. Sure, the four-grid setup looks chaotic at first, but it’s surprisingly intuitive once you get the hang of it.

The bonus buy feature came in handy, enabling me to trigger the bonus round anytime when in demo mode. Seven free spins doesn’t offer much room to work with, but the second grid still proved fairly easy to unlock, triggering in seven out of 10 sessions.

However, during those test runs, the third grid only showed up once while the fourth grid was a total no-show. Still, the way sticky Wilds are copied onto newly unlocked grids creates superb payout potential. This alone makes the bonus worth chasing for.

Symbols and paytable

The symbols in the Dog House Multihold are identical to the original game, with five low-paying card icons (A to 10) and six high-paying symbols represented mostly by dogs.

The stars of the game include a Beagle, Pug, Shih Tzu, and the game’s highest paying symbol, the Rottweiler. Completing the lineup on the lower end of the high-paying tier is the dog collar and a bone.

The game’s minimum bet per spin stands at $0.20, while the maximum limit sits at $100. A winning combination of five Rottweiler symbols pays 25x your stake, equivalent to $5 on a spin of $0.20.

The x2 and x3 Wild multipliers can significantly boost your return. However, the game’s maximum of 9,000x your stake can only be achieved during the bonus game, when multiple grids and sticky Wilds come into play.

Keen-eyed readers and fans of the first game will have noticed that, while the symbols are the same, the payouts interact differently. For instance, in the Dog House Multihold, five-of-a-kind of the highest-paying symbols pays 25x your stake.

However, in The Dog House, the same combination pays 37.5x your stake (or $7.50 on a $0.20 bet). Mid-range symbols also pay less than before, which means individual wins are smaller overall.

Although, to be fair, the game balances this out with a considerably higher maximum win potential, allowing for bigger combined payouts once the bonus kicks in.

How to play The Dog House Multihold slot

Before wagering any real money, you can start off by trying out the free demo version available directly on the Pragmatic Play website.

Bets range from $0.20 up to $100, and are spread across 40 preset bet levels that gradually increase until you hit the $40 mark. From here, bets rise in $10 increments until you reach $100.

To adjust your stake, use the plus (+) and minus (-) buttons located on either side of the large spin button, marked by two circular arrows.

Selecting the plus or minus button will open up a small betting menu where you can set your wager by adjusting the total bet or toggling the coins per line. Alternatively, you can select the ‘Max Bet’ button.

Expert verdict

First off, it’s important to remember that The Dog House Multihold is not a sequel, but rather an enhanced version of an already existing slot. That said, it’s hard to overlook just how closely the base game mirrors its predecessor. This can make it come off as a bit of a cash grab by Pragmatic Play.

By contrast, another spin-off from the original slot called The Dog House Megaways, shakes things up with its asymmetrical and dynamic grid layout, creating an entirely different rhythm to gameplay.

However, the whole point of The Dog House Multihold lies in its entertaining bonus feature. Its multi-grid setup delivers a unique twist to the bonus game format and comes across as a genuine breath of fresh air.

In fact, there are very few top slot games with a comparable bonus structure. The closest that come to mind include Slot Vegas Megaquads by Big Time Gaming and KISS Reels of Rock by Play’n GO. Both experiment with multi-reel or multi-panel setups, although neither capture the four-grid tension and pacing of The Dog House Multihold.

The only real negatives are the lower payouts for higher-paying symbols compared to the original, along with the drop in RTP. However, this is offset by the significantly higher maximum win potential, which jumps from 6,750x in the first game up to 9,000x in this one.
